Proud is an understatement. June 28th, 2024 on the 55th anniversary of the Stonewall Rebellion, we celebrated the grand opening of the Stonewall National Monument Visitor Center. As the first LGBTQIA+ visitor center within the National Park Service, the launch of the SNMVC signifies a landmark achievement in American history. We couldn’t have done it without the support of our Founding Partners. Thank you for celebrating with us. We’re just getting started. #MeetUsAtTheMonument #PrideLive #StonewallDay2024 Photo Credit: Getty Images

When Isabella Kulak was sent home from school for wearing her Ribbon Skirt, she bravely called out those colonial policies alongside Indigenous communities and allies across Canada. Today, on January 4 we celebrate National #RibbonSkirtDay!! The history of the Ribbon Skirt comes through many cross-cultural interactions, and so, many different interpretations and expressions exist. Nearly all First Nations and Indigenous groups across Turtle Island have a strong tradition in this iconic piece of clothing, and all have their own stories and protocol surrounding them. The modern version of the Ribbon Skirt may sometimes differ from its historical sister, and how it came to be is an illuminating story of how modern #Indigenous, #Metis and #FirstNations also developed. What #IndigenousWomen wore hundreds of years ago, may not be recognized as a #RibbonSkirt today, but they began to show the elements that would start that evolution. In this new age, more than ever, we need to identify the things we have in common rather than those we have in difference. We have an opportunity to use these similarities in tradition and regalia as tools to find common ground, to open dialogue and to honour one another’s voices. The Ribbon Skirt represents that opportunity. A Ribbon Skirt can be a simple as a piece of clothing, or as sacred as a piece of #Regalia used only for #SweatLodge and #Ceremony. It can be an expression of #Womanhood and #Strength, of remembrance of #MMIWG2S, a symbol of #Defiance and #Protection of #NaturalResources against corporate powers, or a representation of the journey of those who are reclaiming their identities through traditional practices. Ribbon Skirts are a symbol of resilience, survival and identity, but their meaning changes with each person who wears one and each person who shares their history. For Indigenous peoples, the Ribbon Skirt represents their own personal #Reclamation. It represents reclaiming identity, and wearing that identity proudly. It has become armour. It is a cultural protection against #Assimilation and #Degradation. When #IndigenousWomen wear ribbon skirts, they are reaffirming what they know themselves to be. It is a part of #IndigenousHeritage, and although communities all have different traditions and sacred protocol surrounding the Ribbon Skirt, they do not belong specifically to any one group they are shared by all communities. There are many different meanings belonging to the colours, materials and number and length of ribbons. This is something that is specific and unique to each teaching and each nation, and I encourage you to reach out to #KnowledgeKeepers and #elders of your communities to learn more about their traditions and protocol. #RibbonSkirtDay #IndigenousWomen #RibbonSkirt #Heritage Photo credits: Allie Hearn/Indian Time Isabella Kulak/Global News Alyssa Sutherland/Global News Autumn Peltier/Maryam Southam Photography

Understanding the lived experience of our clients and ourselves is essential to advancing our work as architects. In this interview, I speak with Sarah Nelson-Woynicz, AIA and Yiselle Santos Rivera, AIA, NOMA, the masterminds behind the book Out in Architecture, a book dedicated to bringing visibility to the voices and experiences of the LGBTQIA+ community. We discuss identity beyond practice, the intersection of identity and practice and reclaiming space and identity. This is essential listening for anyone who wants to advocate for a model of practice that is inclusive and responsive. https://lnkd.in/gdeq5Cc7

Artist, PhD candidate UNSW, Curator and Assistant Curatorial Co-ordinator at Qtopia and Curator/ Co-founder at Draw Space
My drawing ‘Queer Elements’ created for Qtopia and my exhibition ‘We’re Here, We’re Queer’ now has prints available for sale through my gallery m. The initial concept for this work came from former head curator Liz Bradshaw and 50% of profits go towards Qtopia’s seed fund. Ever wondered what the + symbol at the end of LGBTQIA+ stands for? Queer Elements transforms the scientific periodic table into a rainbow of colours, words, flags and symbols, encompassing the A to Z of LGBTQIA+ terminology, vernacular, slang and communities. The artwork fuses art and science, employing the periodic table structure to create a diagram of queer culture through language. Arranged alphabetically, Each ‘element’ is a specific term, slang word or subgroup within the LGBTQIA+ community, alongside their corresponding flag and symbol. The periodic table is known for its adaptability as new elements are discovered. Similarly, the language of queer identity is continually evolving and being added to. ‘Queer Elements’ captures this dynamism acknowledging that language is a living entity reflecting an ever-changing LGBTQIA+ cultural landscape. 12+ Years Leading Social Impact | Expert in Inclusive Leadership, Program Management & Operational Efficiency | Founder | Committed to Racial & Gender Justice | Strengthening Inclusion & Enhancing Operational Excellence
What a weird flex from the Tractor Supply Company! Have you read your own corporate #values? Value 1: #Ethics - "Do the 'right thing' and always encourage others to do the right, honest & ethical things. Value 2: #Respect - Trust others with the same consideration we expect for ourselves. Be a champion for diversity and inclusion. Value 7: #Teamwork - Value different viewpoints...Together everyone achieves more. You indicate a desire to provide a supportive community of care, but these policy reversals demonstrate an inept understanding of serving the good neighbors in the hometowns you state you care so deeply for. What a misinterpretation of the values you claim to hold so dearly. 1. Discontinuing support for civic engagement and Pride, repurposing funding for "rural American priorities" – as if these are mutually exclusive. 2. Eliminating #DEI goals and positions via a passive-aggressive memo, while claiming to ensure a "respectful environment" (measured by...whom, exactly?). 3. Withdrawing from HRC data reporting, conveniently removing transparency and accountability measures. 4. Abandoning #carbon emissions goals, disregarding the long-term viability of our planet and the communities they claim to serve. This reads like a dog whistle – a cry for attention from the loud voices who scapegoat equity and inclusion for poor business outcomes. It's a blatant affront to Black and brown people, queer folks, and others with marginalized identities, implying we don't exist, belong, matter or contribute to farming or rural communities. The timing of this announcement, coinciding with the first presidential debate, seems to code a political message that "making America great" means aligning with these exclusionary values. And that's the end of my report on"things that made me mad as soon as I woke up today." What an embarrassment. #CorporateResponsibility #Inclusion #Sustainability
The callous decision coupled with the cruel statement that accompanied it is beyond disappointing—it’s a gut-wrenching blow to LGBTQI+ individuals and our allies. It’s as if they are blind to the existence of queer people in rural areas, dismissing our voices and struggles without a second thought. I may not have been a patron of theirs, but as a Black queer woman living in Tennessee and witnessing first hand the hate and discrimination our community continues to face year after year, I am compelled to raise my voice. When a company claims to embrace diversity, equity, and inclusion, they must be willing to stand ten toes down and fully commit to that stance. Performative gestures of allyship are not only hollow but also harmful, giving strength to those who propagate hate while exposing the true nature of the company’s values and moral compass. Tractor Supply Company In contrast, I am deeply grateful for companies like Carver Construction Company LLC, exemplified by their unwavering support through initiatives like Carver Cares. Being LGBTQI+ comes with its own set of challenges, and genuine allyship is no easy task either. The love and backing you provide mean everything to us, showing what true solidarity and compassion look like in practice. Thank you for being a beacon of hope in a world that can often feel dark and unwelcoming.

Yesterday, I wrote and delivered this national trends report to my local Goose Creek, SC Cultural Arts Commission. This report offers insights into emerging trends in the arts sector focusing on community engagement, equity, accessibility, and supporting diverse leadership within the arts. While some recommendations are tailored specifically to Goose Creek, such as supporting local arts-based businesses and making arts spaces more accessible, the overarching themes of inclusivity, equitable practices, and the importance of community engagement are universally applicable. This report encourages communities everywhere to evaluate their arts programming and initiatives through these lenses, suggesting that even those outside Goose Creek could find valuable strategies and ideas to apply locally. Whether it's diversifying the types of art presented, ensuring equitable pay and contracts for artists, or enhancing accessibility for all community members, there's a wealth of insights that can inspire positive changes in arts communities nationwide. #ArtsInnovation #CommunityArts #EquitableArts #CulturalTrends #ArtsAccessibility #InclusiveArts #LocalArtsImpact #CreativeCommunities #ArtsAdvocacy #GooseCreekArts

🌟 Honoring Juneteenth: Celebrating Freedom and Empowerment 🌟 Today, we commemorate Juneteenth, a day of immense significance in American history. At Operation Xcel , we stand in solidarity with our community as we reflect on the past, celebrate progress, and commit to a future of equality and justice for all. Juneteenth marks the emancipation of the last enslaved African Americans in the Confederacy, symbolizing freedom and resilience. As an organization dedicated to global citizenship and human rights education, we recognize the importance of this day in our collective journey toward a more inclusive society. Let’s use this day not only to celebrate but also to educate ourselves and others about the impact of systemic racism and the ongoing fight for equality. Together, we can create meaningful change and build a future where every individual has the opportunity to thrive. #Juneteenth #DiversityAndInclusion #SocialJustice #OperationXcel
