Interesting…telemedicine is like any other approach. It is a good tool in certain circumstances and may not be the answer for others. This year's health services and policy research article of the year is a must-read focusing on the interplay between the use of virtual care and continuity of care. Congratulations to Lauren Lapointe-Shaw and colleagues who showed that Ontario patients with virtual visits (mostly phone) to an outside family physician were 66% more likely than those who connected virtually with their own family physician to go to an emergency department in the next 7 days. This means that there was one additional ED visit for every 77 outside virtual visits. Primary care is the foundation of health care, according to Dr. Sreekanth Chaguturu, CVS Health's Chief Medical Officer — but results from a 2022 poll conducted by the Associated Press and the NORC Center for Public Affairs Research underscore just how much adults worry about getting access to this essential component of their well-being.
