To be a successful recruiter you must knock on doors… In my opinion, this is not a true statement. From my experience, it doesn't work. What does work? Arranged meetings! No ones time is being wasted, no one feels awkward (hopefully) and you have time to talk. Rather than a rushed few minutes on the doorstep if you are lucky enough to actually see someone. I am curious, if you had a recruiter (or anyone) turn up on your doorstep unannounced how would you react? At home I rarely answer! Especially when it's 7pm I am in the midst of the toddler bedtime routine and I see someone with a clipboard. Why do we expect anything different when knocking on the doors of businesses? Some clients think recruiters have got endless free time? I've had a couple of instances recently where a client has asked us to work a role for them, we've qualified the budget, expectations and have been assured that its a solid and fully signed-off opportunity, we're good to go. Based on this, we've invested time into finding good contractors, only to then have the roles pulled - the hiring manager has changed their mind, the role is no longer needed. If you value the relationship with your recruiters, either dont ask them to work roles that are still going through approval, be a bit more patient, or at least be honest about the situation. If you're actually doing some early-market engagement and want to see who's available, explain this and a lot of recruiters will happily help you but they'll manage expectations with the contractors they speak with. #recruitmentlife #clientexpectations

Working with Tom Wilson last year and he dropped a great line of "eating your frogs first", i.e. get the parts of your day that you don't like out of the way so you can then focus on what you do best. I like to take it further, if there's an element of my job, my business that is not a key strength, and perhaps take away from generating revenue then perhaps there are other options. That's a lot of how the People2.0 business started, let recruiters focus on finding contractor roles and the talent to fill them, and let the back office, engagements risks and other headaches be handled by us. Should consultants turn down an initial 3-month gig? It’s interesting to see how some consultants believe once they get their foot through the door, they have no doubt if the budgets and workload is there then they will get extended past the 3 months. However I’ve seen a lot of contractors not even entertain the topic - unless it’s a 6 month gig. (Minimum) Buying signals to look if you don’t just cut of a call once hearing the contract length. - The clients goals are aligned with your values. - The programme itself, if it gives you a breath of fresh air and a drive to go in to either kickstart it or stop it from sinking. - Do some digging: See how long other contractors have been in the team for, if over 3 months that’s a signal of a possible extension. Personally I believe if you get a good feel for the client and their goals then go for it. However I also appreciate people a lot of personable factors that may come in to play but the beauty of being a contractor is bringing value to a number of organisations in your career.
