📣 #PublicationAlert One of my first inspirations from my PhD work, Ecological Robustness-Oriented Grid Network Design for Resilience Against Multiple Hazards, has been officially published on #IEEEXplore at IEEE Transactions on Power Systems #ieeetps #ieeepes Using long-term resilient ecosystems as benchmarks, we re-design the power networks to realize a higher ecological robustness (Reco) for power systems. The improvement of Reco comes along with improvement of inherent resiliency and robustness against unexpected events. The results show that we can greatly reduce violations under N-x contingencies with a few added branches strategically guided by Reco. Additionally, the metric, Reco, shows great potential for further investigation and application to quantify and explain the inherent resiliency of power systems leveraging its information theory- and graph theory-based formulation. With the increasing integration of renewable energies and the target of net-zero, it actually requires our power networks, both transmission and distribution networks, to be resilient. Supplying clean energy toward decarbonization and greater sustainability is only advantageous if the resilience and functionality of power and energy systems can be secured against catastrophic events. It is a critical consideration of how to design and upgrade the power infrastructure for enhanced inherent resilience. Reco has the capability to serve as a quantifiable indictor of power network's inherent resilience. 🆕🌟open access publication in Sustainable Cities and Society 🌟 🏙The interconnected nature of urban water systems and other critical infrastructure domains (CIDs) like energy grids, mobility networks, and IT infrastructure is widely recognized. Multi-sector dependencies and joint management of different CIDs can mitigate undesired cascading effects across domains. But, which combined modeling frameworks and software for coupled simulation exist out there? 📚In our new paper led by Siling Chen we contribute a review of 24 recent peer-reviewed publications on coupled simulation of urban water systems (water supply and drainage networks) and other CIDs, including energy grids, mobility networks, and IT infrastructure systems, extracted from a larger set of 222 publications. 💡More than that, we deduct a forward-thinking research agenda, which shall prioritize: . knowledge transfer when fostering coupled simulation across CIDs . reconciling differences in spatial and temporal dependencies . scaling up simulations to a network level . exploration of multi-sector interconnections beyond bilateral dependencies Read it here: https://lnkd.in/gsrTYH7X This is the ouput of a great multi-sector and multidisciplinary effort supported by the ide3a project (http://ide3a.net) and enabled by the Einstein Center Digital Future. Yesterday, I was at the South-West EPSRC Regional Engagement Event host by my colleagues at the Bristol Digital Futures Institute, University of Bristol. Really fascinating insight into the breadth and depth of the research we do in the South-West across both academia and industry. It was a pleasure to meet and hear Charlotte Deane, Executive Chair of EPSRC, thoughts around future-proofing the #STEM workforce, building a #sustainable and vibrant #nationalcapability in research and infrastructure, and catalysing the innovation the UK needs in critical technology and #NetZero. Equally, a great pleasure to share a roundtable discussion with both Jonathan Dawes and Jane Nicholson around #NetZero and #Commercialisation. Stimulating and insightful discussion. In University of Bristol Engineering and University of Bristol Science, SPO Bristol, we have great strengths from fundamentals to applied research working with all industrial colleagues in #AdvancedMaterials, #EnergyStorage #GreenEnergyProduction using #wind, #tidal, #hydrogen, #SustainableAviation, #SmarterAviation, #PowerElectronics, #EnergyManagement and #EnergySystemsDesign to name a few. Clearly, we can build big in #SouthWest through EPSRC funding and linking to industry through Bristol Innovations, the GW4 Alliance, Western Gateway and West of England Combined Authority. But we also need to change the hearts and minds of our society if Net Zero is to be achieved. Clearly our new technologies will support and accelerate this transition but equally it will be a change in our consumption practices now and into the future that will also deliver the biggest reduction in carbon emissions. Realising this change in an equitable way will require whole new approaches to decision making, policy development, economic models, education, and public engagement and will underpin the transition to low carbon technology adoption. A big ask nationally and internationally but something our civic-academic partnerships in the South-West firmly believe in. Watch this space, watch this 'region'...

This high-performance computing capability will drive key research and industry projects across the UK. 🔸Trialling Waste Heat Storage in Disused Mine Workings in Edinburgh: A first-of-its-kind system is being trialed so it can store waste heat from the facility in disused mine workings, which could heat over 5,000 households in #Edinburgh by recycling energy that would otherwise be wasted. Tel Aviv University's Prof. HAGIT MESSER -Yaron has received a prestigious medal from the US-based Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) for environmental and safety technologies. Messer-Yaron was honored for her research into climate change, in particular using AI systems to observe rainfall. The professor’s original research uses cellular networks to monitor weather and precipitation, which would eliminate the need to install separate infrastructures that would need to be widespread to be reliable. Co-investigators of the #TransiT hub Professors David Flynn and Philip Greening are part of a new national research hub to upgrade and #decarbonise the UK's interconnected transport infrastructures. Backed by £10m from the Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom and UK Research and Innovation and led by researchers inc. Newcastle University and the University of Cambridge, the Research Hub for Decarbonised Adaptable and Resilient Transport Infrastructures (DARe) will identify pathways and solutions for delivering a resilient, net-zero transport system to meet the challenges of #ClimateChange.
