Hurricane Lee is on the move, rapidly intensifying as a powerful Category 5 storm with devastating winds of 165 mph. It’s tied with Hurricane Matthew for the third fastest rapid intensification in the Atlantic. Uncertainty remains regarding Lee's path to the US. Factors include high pressure, the Bermuda High, and the position of the jet stream. Two scenarios: Out to Sea: Quick northward turn if high pressure weakens, staying away from the East Coast. Close to East Coast: Slower turn north if high pressure remains strong, posing a closer approach threat mainly north of the Carolinas. Lee is at least seven days away from potentially impacting the East Coast. We'll keep you updated as Lee's path becomes clearer in the coming days. Twelve Capital Event Update Hurricane Situation There are currently two named storms in the Atlantic, namely tropical storms Rina and Philippe. Both Rina and Philippe developed off the west coast of Africa and headed west across the Atlantic, with Philippe currently 200km east of the Caribbean Islands of Antigua and Barbuda. Both storms currently have similar forecasts of curving eastwards away from U.S. mainland. Using the current forecasts, we expect no impact from either storm. Season Retrospective As of 1 October 2023, we are approximately 75% of the way through the Atlantic hurricane season, measured by ACE (Accumulated Cyclone Energy). Tropical Storm #Lee is forecast to become a powerful hurricane over the next few days. The latest advisory from the National Hurricane Center posits that the maximum sustained winds at day 5 could be as high as 150 mph, only 7 mph short of category 5 intensity. Lee should pass to the north of the #LesserAntilles and #PuertoRico; however, it will be worth watching should any deviations in the track bring the impacts closer to the islands. We will provide further updates throughout the week as Lee evolves. Right now, it is too soon to say whether #Bermuda, the #USA, or #Canada may see impacts down the line.

In the #Atlantic, Hurricane #Lee rapidly intensified to a dangerous #category5 hurricane late last night, as was forecasted to occur by the National Hurricane Center. The maximum sustained winds as of 5 am EDT were up to 165 mph - these may change in the next advisory set to be released at 11 AM. The current forecasts continue to suggest that Lee will remain far enough north of the Caribbean to spare the region tropical storm/hurricane impacts. Long-term outlook remains fuzzy.
