When's the last day that you heard no music? Saw no one else's photos? Saw no TV commercials? Didn't watch even 5min of a TV show or movie? Didn't listen to a Podcast? Weren't exposed to a commercial in between YouTube videos?
We often forget, but we are SURROUNDED by art. And on any given day, it makes us incredibly richer.
But, sadly, not the artists. The vast majority of artists earn very little. A few strike it rich and you know their names. But those talented and lucky few are the rare exceptions. This is true in painting, photography, sculpting, composing, dancing, writing, and acting.
This is why the #sagaftrastrike and the #wgastrike are so crucial right now. Just like doctors, lawyers, accountants, and project managers: #artists spend 15, 20, or more years learning and perfecting their craft. But unlike doctors, lawyers, accountants, and project managers, most artists can't afford to pay rent, let alone afford health insurance.
If your response to this is: "OK, then maybe she shouldn’t go into a #career that doesn't guarantee her a decent standard of living!" then you're unaware of the deeper truth: art doesn't pay because media #streamingplatforms - who make literal billions of dollars off the back of artists - continue to not pay their artists anything close to a fair share or a #livingwage
We speak in America about the horrors of slave labor in other countries, but awful labor practices also happen here, literally in front of our eyes... That character actor you've seen appear on a few TV shows and movies on #netflix and #Amazon Prime? Well, her daily paycheck isn’t high unless she’s a lead or a star. If she can’t earn about $27,000 during the calendar year, she won’t qualify for healthcare and pension. She also won’t get any meaningful residuals when those #streaming companies stream her face or voice millions of times globally.
Worse: she doesn't even get statistics from the streaming companies saying how many times her face was broadcast to millions of people.
This is where you come in.
The public has always wanted and NEEDED #art so this moment in history is also on you: speak up and defend your friends, family, and colleagues who have invested their lives to become talented artists.
I'm a 30-year veteran of SAG/AFTRA and I've never once earned enough in my TV and Film work (and I've worked a bunch) to earn health care through my union. So here's my personal ask: consider canceling your Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, Disney, or Apple subscriptions. All of them if you can, but - if not - perhaps, start with just one or two.
Then, when you cancel, TELL THE COMPANY why: because you’re no longer willing to pay $18/month to support artists not earning a living wage. Because you can't support any company that hoards profits from those who created them. Because you DO support art and those who devote their lives to making it.
