Every journey of transformation revolves around the pursuit of one thing. Liminality. One of the most powerful and intimidating experiences known to sentient creatures, liminal states represent the exact moment when perceptions shift and lasting change occurs within a human being. At søster, we understand that the art of developing transformative brand experiences lies in creating the perfect environment for your customers or brand partners to transcend from one physical, mental or spiritual state to a much higher one, using your brand values to guide them into a state of liminality and beyond. The word liminal is derived from the Latin word “limen” which literally means “threshold”. And it's important to know that when designing transformative brand experiences, because you'll need to be ready to take people to the limit of their perceived threshold, to the edge of what they believed to be possible, and then empower them to break through it. We've all encountered liminal moments, even if we didn't realise it at the time. Some would have been incredible. Others, may have been quite distressing. But they were all necessary in order to take us from a state of 'what was' to a state of 'what will be'. I took this photograph not long after my last encounter with liminality, sipping on a cold Kilimanjaro whilst dangling my hairy pins over the side of a sunset dhow cruise in Zanzibar. I found myself a bit restless, as I stood on the cliffs at Point Loma, San Diego last week. With each step I could hear the scratch of the rocks and dust on the bottom of my sandals. There's something that happens when you go near such a massive body of water. The sheer power of it. It just swallows you up. So I stood there, swallowed up, absorbed in a moment of nothingness. After a few moments, I felt the crisp breeze of the evening cutting into my exposed collar, reminding me that summer had finally ended. I closed my eyes and took in a slow and delightful breath, not a single atom of oxygen escaping my notice as I welcomed its life energy into my being. And there it was. In this pure experience I saw a moment of pure human experience, unaltered in any way. An inkling of something more than just myself, of the binding fabric connecting us all together. It's these moments that need to be cultivated. Whether through technology, media, or product, the end goal must always be blissful delight. For it is this blissful delight that binds us all together, and it's the thing that makes life worth living, so we must strive to create more of it. That's the true essence of good branding.
