Today is my 8 year work anniversary at Douglas Stuart Ltd. This got me thinking... What is the average tenure of employment? UK - 10.1 years France - 10.4 years Germany - 11.1 years USA - 4.1 years Australia - 3.3 years Denmark - 8 years The average tenure of employment in the #Recruitment industry ranges between 2 to 4 years and the most common reasons for leaving are; 1. Career Advancement (lack of opportunity) 2. Work-Life Balance 3. Feeling Undervalued Which for me speaks volumes for the way Douglas Stuart Ltd. have supported me, given me the opportunity to develop, and thus the reason I'm 8 years in and still enjoying the journey.

Today was my official one-year anniversary with The City of Winder. It has gone incredibly FAST. And I am grateful for the many lessons I've learned along the way. Here's a Top 5 list I came up with that might help someone on their career journey. 1. Collaboration leads to success-You cannot do anything alone. 2. It takes GUTS- You must ask for what you need and be prepared for the answer. 3. New doesn't always mean better-You have to be intentional about changing things, everything can't change all at once. 4. Slowing down is vital-Taking a day or sleeping on an idea is something you have to commit to doing. 5. It takes GRIT-Enthusiasm is common. Endurance is rare. In the words of Angela Duckworth, "...there are no shortcuts to excellence. Developing real expertise, figuring out really hard problems, it all takes time-longer than most people imagine..." #Thankful #Communications #CareerJourney

When it comes to heritage month engagement, always, and I mean ALWAYS, start with food. When it comes to celebrations in a corporate setting, it's easy to just slap a heritage month topic on an all team meeting calendar and call it good. But you are missing the point of integrating how human's connect with each other and the learning opportunity. The most impactful things I have ever learned weren't at a desk, but at a dinner or coffee table. Sharing meals with people has always brought out the BEST stories. That's a no brainer. So what if we used food as the vehicle for learning? Now, let me make this clear, I am NOT telling you to cater what you think is "Black Food" this month in your office. That's not the point. What I am asking you to consider is what if you hired a Black chef to host a cooking a class for your team and then, while sharing a meal, you just simply listened to their story of being in their industry and what cooking means to them? Notice I didn't say "Black cooking". You let them share what they want because it's all Black ANYWAYS. Black is a plethora of beautiful things. Sharing a meal is a safe, disarming way to connect with cultures in a meaningful way. Be creative with your heritage month engagement and see how much it shifts your office culture!

So this is me getting as close to feeling like Justin Timberlake as I ever will at the Dallas Pride Parade. Despite all the feels happening for me personally here, this moment captures what it truly means to be a part of something bigger. Beyond the music, the float, the banners, and the countless high fives from the crowd, there was an amazing group of partners (employees) coming together to stand for visibility, equality, and change (in a state that can sometimes feel unwelcoming and even hostile to those just trying to live a life as their authentic selves). Just as Pride Parades are more than just parades, Employee Resource Groups (Partner Networks at Starbucks) are more than just "DEI" hashtags and photo ops. They are an opportunity to leverage the scale and power of an organization to uplift employees, causes and communities that can directly benefit from our support.   To be transparent, I do not have an official leadership role in any of the Starbucks Partner Networks, my involvement is ad hoc and in the moment. And high fiving in parades was never part of my career goals. But from the perspective of my “day job” I see direct benefits through the lens of my professional development: influencing without authority, connecting with partners across the organization, helping others succeed, project/event planning, public speaking, community engagement – my involvement with the networks checks so many boxes. In short, ERGs drive results on many levels. So if you could use a moment of feeling like a rock star (or being a part of something bigger), consider starting, supporting or leading an ERG. This was a great panel event. Honest accounts of the highs and lows of juggling parenting with career progression, as well as tips to manage day-to-day. Key takeaways for me included: 🕵️Get to know your team - don't assume that just because someone is a parent that their circumstances will be the same as other parents in your team. 👨🏾🍼Parent out loud - being honest (and sometimes vulnerable) about your responsibilities at home can help you feel you can be yourself at work. Spending less energy on hiding what's happening in your personal life can help you to focus more on working efficiently and effectively. 🎯 Flexibility and empathy is key - lead with empathy and compassion to get the best out of people. Look after your people and your people will smash their goals/targets. It's great to know that our senior leaders are human and that they're willing to be brave and share their experiences so that the rest of us can benefit. 🌟 Embracing the Culture of Appreciation at Crumbl Pensacola/Gulf Breeze 🌟 Early in my career, I learned the importance of Employee Development, Customer Service, Growth, & Profitability from the amazing team at Enterprise Mobility. I strongly believe that a focus on our team's development and company culture naturally leads to success in the other core areas. One practice we've adopted to nurture our team and culture is our "Crew Shout Outs" shared weekly through Slack. But why does this matter? 1️⃣ It cultivates a culture of appreciation, encouraging our emerging leaders to actively seek and celebrate the positives within our team. Acknowledging the great work happening around us! 2️⃣ These shout outs foster a strong sense of community and collaboration among our entire Crew. Public recognition uplifts individuals, creating an environment where everyone feels valued and motivated. And besides being an incredible way to celebrate achievements, these shout outs also keep me young and hip by keeping up with the latest slang! To follow up a bit on my post from yesterday I wanted to share some perspective. I've worked two jobs most of my career. Throughout my paralegal career I've also worked nights and weekends cleaning houses, shipping at Macy's warehouse, serving customers at Chipotle and the list goes on. I hated working night shift at Macy's, hated it with a passion. I worked at the Public Defender's Office from 8am-5pm, Mon-Fri then on Thurs, Fri and Sat I worked 6pm-6am fulfilling orders for shipping at Macy's. I didn't sleep at all Thursday or Friday, then I would sleep all day Saturday after my shift and Sunday. 12 hours on my feet was brutal. The drying out of my hands and frequent paper cuts was awful. But the absolute worst part of it was knowing that no matter how hard I was working I still couldn't afford to buy the items I was packaging for other people. Heck, sometimes I couldn't even afford to buy snacks from the breakroom vending machine. I know that I'm not the only law student who has lived this experience. But honestly, I wish there were more of us. Because maybe then we would stop telling first gen students that money isn't everything. Maybe then when we realize how first gen students have already worked to get here we'll stop using hard work as a fear tactic. Hard work is money and money is freedom. Freedom doesn't look the same for everyone but for some of us it's just keeping the lights on.
