I picked up a part time job at Kroger three weeks ago. I am a cashier. On my first night on a register, we had a secret shop - I got a perfect score. My next shift, high fives, and a card to show appreciation! A couple shifts later, I got more high fives and a card, I had performed in the top few of our store with training requirements. A couple of shifts later, more high fives and a card, a lovely customer had completed a survey and gave me very nice praise. Lesson 1: Recognize your employees who put in the effort. We appreciate it. Lesson 2: Give the tools to be exceptional. We appreciate it. Lesson 3: Always give 100%. Every interaction matters. That's all. As much as I love being a cashier - it's not my calling. I haven’t posted recently about my day job, so here’s an update!! Yesterday we officially opened the 3rd brick and mortar location! Crazy right? In ONE year we have opened three completely new stores starting from less than nothing to be fully built, stocked, merchandised, staffed, and operating. This experience has been somewhat of a challenge, yet in my opinion has also been a fairly easy achievement. And no, it hasn’t been easy in the sense that it’s easy work or a simple feat to undertake. You see, it’s all about how you approach things. If you approach things with the confidence that you can accomplish any task necessary, you and your staff will not only be more effective at doing so, but it will be more fulfilling as well.

One of our dedicated Baristas in our Pyrmont Support Centre ☕ We sat down with Caleb to talk about his career journey and why he loves working at Hanes: Q: How did you get your job at Hanes?  A: AimBig Employment helped me on my job search. I've had two other barista roles previously before getting my current role at Hanes. Q: How did you find the recruitment and onboarding process? A: Everyone was really helpful, I transitioned into the role very easily and felt very welcome. I was given a tour of the office and got to help figure out a good spot for the coffee machine with the support of my job coach. Overall the process was quick and easy which I really liked. Q: What's your favourite part about your role and working at Hanes? A: Getting to meet and talk to lots of new people all the time. I like making coffees for the friends I've made and get to hear about their day-to-day. I've also enjoyed having the chance to set up systems and routines that work for me in my role, I feel like my own boss a little bit! Q: Do you have any advice for anyone with a disability who's starting a new job? From a seasonal hire to a Store Manager 🏢 In 2021, I embarked on a journey that I'll cherish forever – coming to Canada as an immigrant, armed with dreams💭 and determination💪 My first job was as a seasonal associate at Dollar Tree during the holidays. Little did I know that this was the first step towards an incredible transformation. ✨ Fast forward two years, and here I stand as the Store Manager at Showcase - Home of the Hottest Trends. The path was challenging, but oh, the rewards have been worth it! 🌟 Here are four learnings from my journey that I'd like to share with you: 1️⃣ Resilience is Key: In the face of adversity, I learned to adapt and bounce back stronger. Stay committed to your goals, no matter how tough the road may seem. 2️⃣ Embrace Opportunity: That seasonal job at Dollar Tree was my chance to prove myself. The first job I had was repo/demo, then I went on to do framing/flooring, then general contracting (under a contractor), Nordstrom rack (Westlake aka a store clerk nightmare), then Nordstrom selling shoes, then bartending. I also washed dishes throughout college. Here are the biggest 2 takeaways from working customer service and physical labor jobs: 1) When you work a job that is physically challenging that you do not necessarily enjoy, it teaches tenacity and humility. 2) When you work a job that requires you to cater towards people in this world it opens your eyes to how difficult it is to be a server, store clerk, or any other role in customer service. You become a more empathetic person. Both of these lessons have had a major impact on who I am as a person, how I treat others, and how I go about business now.
