Baby boomers are in their retirement era. Of the generation born between 1946 and 1964, per Pew Research Center, less than 20% of Americans over the age of 65 were employed as of 2023. However, that's more than double the share of retirement-age people working 35 years ago. It's why a retirement crisis is looming, with many potential retirees either facing financial vulnerability or having to work until they die. While the US economy saw a spike in early retirements during the pandemic, some have "unretired," returning to work amid high costs and elevated interest rates. So who are the Americans fortunate enough to retire? They're likely married, stopped their education after high school, and are making up a bigger share of the population in states like Maine and Florida. Like Jeanette Leardi, I've noticed an uptick in the use of the term "silver tsunami." We need to be vigilant in calling out ageism, wherever it occurs. Because even well-meaning individuals can unintentionally reinforce ageism, by their words and policies. A 2022 study describes the concern this way: "While many studies have researched ageism in public policy, few have investigated the impact of public policy on ageism. "Specifically, we are concerned with the unintended impact of aging policies that aim to provide some form of financial or medical aid for older adults, particularly on how such age-specific policies may elevate ageist stereotypes in news media reporting. "This is an important area of inquiry because public policies have an outsized and a direct impact on society..." AARP: While your article points out important factors affecting retirement for Baby Boomers, it's not helpful --- and is in fact, counterproductive --- for you to rely on the ageist meme of "silver tsunami" to get your messages across. It feeds the public's perception of crisis rather than opportunity. To see what I mean, check out my Ageful Living blog post: https://lnkd.in/g5THeBxX https://lnkd.in/gNXS9pDk

It seems to me that we’re at an inflexion point as a society, represented by a reset in attitudes towards retirement and later life. By 2033, an extra five million over 65s are expected to live in our towns and cities. To me, this is not surprising - a high proportion of our customers now want to live connected to a vibrant community and the amenities that help them stay independent, active and purposeful. However, we’re not building enough age-appropriate housing in our towns and cities to meet this rising demand. That’s why we’re backing ARCO (Associated Retirement Community Operators) call for an integrated retirement community in every town. Aswell as doing our bit to build a new generation of integrated retirement communities that put our elders back at the heart of their wider community.
