PV history and future, all in one place. Meyer Burger located in the #Solarvalley near Bitterfeld in Germany, manufactures solar cells in the former halls of #Sovello, one of the many German PV players during the first PV boom early in this century. I still remember my visit at #Sovello in, I think, 2009 with Philipp Neff. I am very happy to be back in the same building with Gunter Erfurt to discuss the expansion of Meyer Burger - as well as the significant challenges, which we can hopefully overcome together as a #unitedPVsector. As Gunter and I also agreed in the Board of SolarPower Europe, there is a great and urgent need for action to support the much needed re-build of PV manufacturing in Europe against the backdrop of steeply declining world market prices. 1. Immediate state-aid for EU manufacturers are necessary to deal with large inventories that can’t be sold at current market prices without significant write downs. But this is only a short term fix to deal with the unexpected market turmoil. 2. To be sustainable, we need a clearly defined “resilience segment” in the EU PV market to provide a stable demand at a fair price for “made in Europe” PV. Only this will enable further expansion of capacity along the entire value chain, to bring production cost down significantly and provide the “de-risked” access to solar technology in a geopolitically risky world. 3. The re-build of PV manufacturing in Europe needs to happen while staying embedded in a global PV market with increasingly transparent supply chains, and without trade barriers such as tariffs. We need to rebuild Europe with the help of international suppliers, not against them. And all suppliers will have to increase transparency and sustainability of their value creation by joining transparency mechanisms such as the #SolarStewardshipInitiative(SSI). Only the combination of all three points above will allow us to accelerate deployment of PV while also increasing resilience and sustainability of our supply base. What sounds straight forward, is a hugely complex political effort. Thank you Gunter Erfurt and Christoph Podewils for staying the course in favor of an ambitious political framework for effective industrial policy and against tariffs - while contributing greatly to resilience of PV supply to Europe with every module you produce and we sell to our customers.
Gunter Erfurt on Tour Episode 6: Distribution partner from the very beginning In the sixth episode, our CEO Gunter Erfurt welcomes Jochen Hauff to the #Solar #Valley. Jochen Hauff is Director Corporate Strategy, #Energy #Policy and #Sustainability at BayWa r.e. Global. With branches in 31 countries, BayWa r.e is a leading global developer, service provider, PV #distributor and supplier of energy solutions in the field of #renewable #energies. During a tour of the Meyer Burger #solar #cell #production, the two talk about current challenges facing the industry and why a resilience segment is needed, in which European players come into play. A big thank you to Aurora Energy Research, Frederik Beelitz and my brilliant co-planelists Steffen Schülzchen, Kilian Leykam and Ilona Dickschas for this exciting panel on a hot topic. In my opinion, there was great consensus that ◾ the storage industry can and will mix the green with the gray. The metering technology is in place and we are waiting for the signal from the Federal Network Agency. ◾ BESS are better than any other asset at preventing redispatch. However, they are not taken into account in the current 13k market design. ◾ BESS must have a firm place in the long-term scenarios of the Federal Ministry of Economics. ◾ the regulatory hurdles for BESS should be addressed by Solar Package II and the BNetzA before the end of this legislative period. Let's hope that we'll be quite a bit further along with the next Aurora summit.
Chairing the final panel session of the day titled, "Finding the Green in Grey: The Opportunities for Hybrid Battery and Renewables Projects" Frederik Beelitz, Advisory Principal, sparked an engaging discussion between our expert panellists Anna von Bremen, Osborne Clarke ; Ilona Dickschas, ju:niz Energy ; Kilian Leykam, Aquila Clean Energy EMEA ; Steffen Schülzchen, Entrix. The panel discussion focused on the implications of the recently published German storage strategy (Speicherstrategie) and its potential impact on battery storage and renewable energy projects. Key topics included regulatory challenges, financial uncertainties, and the differentiation between 'green' and 'grey' power. The participants discussed various aspects of project planning, market design, and the integration of battery storage with renewable energy sources. The panel discussion underscored the importance of regulatory improvements, economic viability, and technological integration in advancing Germany's storage strategy. The participants highlighted the need for a cohesive approach that includes clear regulations, effective market designs, and robust financial planning to support the deployment of large-scale battery storage alongside renewable energy projects. #AuroraSummitBerlin #EnergyPolicy #CoLocation #Renewables #Batteries
