PUBLIC SPACE: Clermont Auvergne Métropole REAFFIRMES GENDER EQUALITY IN AN AWARENESS-RAISING CAMPAIGN
Equality between women and men shouldn't be an issue in 2023, yet... Street harassment, ordinary sexism and gender inequality suffered by women in the public space have led Clermont Auvergne Métropole to raise awareness of these phenomena through a communication campaign and to commit itself to a fairer and more egalitarian society reminding people that public space is a common good, open to all, and that it must be mixed, egalitarian, inclusive and caring.
Clermont Auvergne Métropole is Lead Partner of the URBACT IV network FEMACT-Cities.
Despite being enshrined in law, equality between women and men is struggling to become a reality, from school to the office, on public transport and on the sports field... gender inequalities persist everywhere. And if there's one place where gender inequality is most apparent, it's in the street.
It's a fact that public spaces are used differently by men and women. Men and women do not move around in the same way, or for the same reasons. While women use public space mainly for utilitarian purposes and to get around (work, family and domestic chores), men use it more for stationary or leisure purposes. In addition to its unequal use, public space is also much more restrictive for women restrictive for women, whose freedoms are sometimes curtailed.
In France, 8 out of 10 women are afraid to go home alone in the evening (1); 48% of women admit to adapting their dress when using public transport (2); more than 6 out of 10 women out of 10 have been whistled at in the street (63%) (3).
➡ RAISING AWARENESS TO MOBILISE PEOPLE AND TAKE ACTION
With 4 visuals, this campaign depicts women in their daily lives, with the aim of with the aim of reminding us of something that should be obvious to everyone: women have their place everywhere, all the time.
Whether on public transport, at a café, or even in the street, women must be able to live and work in harmony with others.
In the street, women must be able to live and move around quietly, freely and serenely. Their right to the city is the same as that of men and cannot be called into question.
This campaign will be on display in the streets of Clermont Auvergne Métropole throughout November.
