WORKSHOPPING IN THE REGION | Last week, FVC’s John Braid, Kellie Bauer-Simpson and Lisa Chappell were back down in the Margaret River region, working with our clients at the Shire of Augusta Margaret River, to conduct community and stakeholder consultation for their Local Biodiversity Strategy that is currently being drafted. A series of three workshops were conducted in Augusta and Margaret River, which gathered valuable local input regarding the Shire’s biodiversity assets, threats to biodiversity, actions to help combat the threats, and other opportunities for protection and enhancement of biodiversity assets. A key component of the strategy will be the 10-year Action Plan, outlining activities, projects and initiatives that the Shire will seek to carry out, to protect and enhance biodiversity assets across the local government area. The strategy will also feature a focus on community engagement, advocacy and the partnerships and relationships that the Shire has, or could develop, that create a culture of stewardship towards the natural environment. For our team, it was wonderful to work with such an enthusiastic and dedicated bunch of people over the two days, generously sharing ideas to contribute to the Local Biodiversity Strategy. #LocalBiodiversityStrategy #ShireofAugustaMargaretRiver #biodiversity #stakeholderconsultation #communityconsultation #consultationworkshops #environmentalconsultant #environmentalconsulting #environmentalconsultingwa #environmentalconsultingperth #perthenvironmentalconsultants #environmentalconsultinglife #focusedvisionconsulting #fvc #projectforgood #projectsforgood #projects4good #fvcprojects4good #feelgoodproject #conservation #naturalresourcemanagement #floraandfauna #flora #fauna #ecology

A biodiversity credit system can help to protect important habitats and species by providing financial incentives to manage land in a way that benefits both wildlife and local communities. By purchasing credits, corporates, philanthropic organisations and others can finance and actively support ‘nature-positive’ actions on public and private land, including whenua Māori. A discussion document for public consultation has been released asking: -how a biodiversity credit system could be set up -what role the Government should play in it. Consultation runs until 3 November. Have your say: https://lnkd.in/gxEd-4mR As well as consultation on the biodiversity credit system, clearer rules on protecting significant biodiversity and tighter requirements for local government to identify and protect areas of significant biodiversity will be phased in over several years from 4 August. Our threatened species populations have been declining by about 2-3% a year over the past 20 years. The government has committed to end extinctions and expand our protected areas to cover 30% of every Australian ecosystem by 2030. However this week’s federal budget was a new low point for investment in nature, highlighting a gulf between what has been promised and what has been funded. Our research has shown Australians want at least 2% of the federal budget spent on nature. Instead, less than 0.1% of the budget spend will support biodiversity in some way. Over the past decade, biodiversity funding has gone down 25% relative to GDP. interesting...biodiversity credits market growing
A France-headquartered nature-based project developer is piloting biodiversity credits in a large area in the Peruvian Amazon rainforest, as it expects the first transactions to happen by the end of the year. Fronterra is developing the project in the Sierra del Divisor National Park in partnership with the national agency for protected areas (Servicio Nacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas por el Estado - SERNANP) in a bid to implement control and surveillance, monitoring, and research in cooperation with local communities. Through this initiative, the company will pilot a scheme being developed by France-based Organization for Biodiversity Certificates (OBC). Juan Carlos Gonzalez Aybar, Fronterra's founder and CEO, told our reporter Giada Ferraglioni that the first units will be listed in the OBC registry and purchased by French prototype biodiversity fund Restore launched this year. This week’s adoption of the Global Biodiversity Framework Fund (GBFF) has the potential to mobilise and accelerate investment in the conservation of wild species and ecosystems. But the GBFF cannot function without an additional $40M. Canada and the UK have shown strong leadership with their financial support – it’s time for Australia and other countries to do the same: https://lnkd.in/gS6dA2pK

The voluntary carbon market is not the only market based approach to funding conservation. The biodiversity crediting market is looking to become a promising addition to the pool of sources of conservation finance. 💵 What is the biodiversity credit market? Biodiversity crediting is a framework to include the economic value of biodiversity in global markets. In this framework, the base unit for valuing nature is a biodiversity credit – a measurable, validated and verified unit which is a digital representation of the avoided loss of, or increase in, an area’s biodiversity. 🐝 Numerous standards are emerging which will define and set protocols for the standardisation and measurement of biodiversity worldwide. 📏 Backed by 13 years of experience in the successful development of forest protection projects, Level is entering the biodiversity market by adopting the use of high-integrity biodiversity standards to invest in Indigenous people and local communities (IP and LCs) and the ecosystems they steward. 🌳 #biodiversity #market #nature #community

The Caribbean Biodiversity Fund (CBF) joins in observing International Day for Biodiversity under the theme “Be Part of the Plan”. This is a call to action for all stakeholders to halt and reverse the loss of biodiversity by supporting the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. The Caribbean stands out as a globally renowned biodiversity hotspot, with its coral reefs, seagrass beds, mangroves, tropical rainforests and unique fauna. These ecosystems not only protect Caribbean coastlines from tropical storms and erosion but also serve as a critical source of food and jobs for local communities. The CBF aims to provide sustainable financing that protects and conserve biodiversity at scale within the region. To date, the CBF has disbursed over US$30 million to 105 sustainable development projects in 14 Caribbean countries that positively impacts more than 30,000 people. With more strategic partnerships and increased resource mobilization, the CBF will continue to work towards a vision of a Caribbean where both nature and people thrive. Today is International Day for Biodiversity. 🌍 🌱 “Be part of the Plan”, the theme of IDB 2024, is a call to action for all stakeholders to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by supporting the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, also referred to as the Biodiversity Plan. UN Biodiversity Governments, indigenous peoples, local communities, non-governmental organisations, lawmakers, businesses, and individuals are encouraged to highlight how they support implementing the Biodiversity Plan. 👏🏻 As part of the mandatory Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) requirements, it is essential to maintain on-site and off-site gains for at least 30 years. A legal agreement must be made that includes detailed information on how the habitats will be managed, maintained, and monitored and who will be responsible for them. This agreement is called the Habitat Management and Monitoring Plan (HMMP) and should be written and compiled by a competent professional ecologist. Our relationship with nature has never been more precarious, as decades of biodiversity decline and ecosystem destruction threaten the resources that we rely on for our well-being and survival. Our new evaluation takes stock of UNDP’s contribution to ecosystem management and biodiversity conservation. Here are a few of the areas it highlights: 📍 Sub-national work is critical to delivering improved ecosystems and biodiversity at scale, but it often proves most challenging. UNDP has a comparative advantage in innovative sub-national support - the ‘missing-middle’ between national policies and field level conservation. The evaluation recommends that UNDP further build on this and seek opportunities to reduce transactions costs and barriers to scaling. 🗺️ The major drivers of biodiversity loss have global dimensions. UNDP support has been effective in managing water resources and protecting the cross-border habitats of migratory birds and snow leopards. UNDP has acted as a convenor in ambitious projects striving for collaborative governance of biodiversity corridors and made important contributions against illegal wildlife trade. ✋ Indigenous People have long given us a first-hand account of ecosystems decline and signaled the threats they experience to their rights, health and culture as they act as custodians. In several places, Indigenous People and environmental advocates working to protect the environment are facing increasing hostility. While UNDP has supported the formal recognition of indigenous conservation, more needs to be done to strengthen the capacity of local institutions to direct and manage more of the resources dedicated to conservation and development. #ForPeopleForPlanet
