Great analogy from Michael on thinking about one's career as a brick wall. As you build your skills and add different skills you make the wall stronger. A wall built on a robust foundation can go much higher than a shallow foundation. Expanding this analogy to the interviews, I will add another great advice that my Engineering classmate and MBA senior Sudeep Chawla once shared with me: "For the interviewer you are an unknown personality, like a brick wall. It is your responsibility to add windows to this brick wall so that they can see how your skillset and experience is relevant to the position. In case you fail to provide a window, they will be forced to poke around with a hammer to get visibility. And you know where the wall gives away first? Where it is the weakest!" So, build your career brick by brick into a strong wall, and be mindful of where to build the windows. Help the interviewers gain confidence that your skillset, experience and attitude together will be able get the job done. Never judge a book by its cover is synonymous with the hiring of seniors. The assumption that anyone over sixty cannot function effectively in the job market is a myth. Developmental milestones do not have absolute truth over the aging process because there are many developmental and social factors that contribute to aging. One’s lifestyle, health condition, or genetics have a lot to do with the aging. Another myth is that people over sixty do not have technology skills. Not all seniors are rolling up and getting ready to die or stay home with their grandchildren. Even if they wanted to, they do not have the luxury to do so because inflation is eroding their retirement funds. Many 50-year-old students are now attending college to upgrade their skills. However, what these newly “improved“ workers bring to the table are not only relevant skills but also years of knowledge and work ethics.

I should add that these are PAID internships. Not only does this make our internships accessible to those who can’t afford to work for free, there is a noticeable difference in the quality and consistency of their work over the span of the semester. It is a lot easier to give more to an organization when they are compensating you for your time. At the very least, I believe we need to be paying interns enough to cover the indirect expenses that come with a job (gas, meals, clothing, etc.).
