Sustainable, secure and universal access is the global challenge and promise of future telecoms. We bring the world together for a more connected future.
I've been attending an event by Rakuten Symphony this morning. The title was about redefining telecoms. While there was certainly some interesting and useful discussion, it actually emphasised how much the industry is struggling to redefine itself. Part of this the inertia and tyranny of legacy systems and thinking, partly the struggle to get by with restrained incomes.
However, the lack of commercial decision-makers in the same room as voices involved in cost reduction and technology introduction is telling. Indeed, several speakers flagged up the breaking down of silos as crucial to really being able to make serious strides forward.
It also limits what conversations and concepts are even on the table for future generations. What are consumers willing actively to pay for? A fresh focus on leveraging existing capabilities in new ways might be constructive.
For example, telcos got spooked over location based services, but positioning and location are still potentially useful. And the insights which can be extracted from telco data are numerous: from a granular understanding of humidity or air quality to tiny ground vibrations tracking earthquakes/ traffic etc, just from network performance data.
Building business cases and capabilities around this kind of stuff could be a real reinvention.
I just came across some interesting reading about a few top-tier companies' strategies with nice summaries. 🔥
As a product manager, your role entails a comprehensive focus on all aspects of your product, where vision & product strategy are key elements. Needless to say, it's also an indicator of PM seniority. Having a straightforward story of how you plan to get from point A to point B while answering the main questions, such as why, where, and how, will help get everyone ( team, stakeholders, sponsors) on the same page. Hence, checking on good examples of such strategies is always exciting and insightful.
I hope you will enjoy reading it as much as I do ( the article is in Ru, but the links are not) 📖
Did you know that companies like Uber, Netflix, Amazon, Facebook, Google, Spotify, etc, are called ‘platforms’ and that this ‘platform economy’ has become an irresistible customer segment for IT and business process services (BPS) providers?
Born-digital tech companies that let multiple businesses or individuals engage with consumers are called platform businesses
Explaining how big an opportunity they are for the IT industry, HfS' Ashish Chaturvedi said they expect the platform economy to generate $35-45 billion revenue for the worldwide IT and business services sectors in FY2024
He further added that the firms that lead the market and ecosystem-level change are Accenture, Cognizant, and Teleperformance. The services providers with rich client experience and a wide array of offerings are TaskUs, Tata Consultancy Services, and WNS

This week I got to present at Rakuten Viber's company updates. I talked about the developments in our User Research domain in the past year, and shared some key insights that helped us make Viber better. Such work certainly requires a team effort, and I couldn't have asked for a better team here at Viber! 😍

‘Sometimes you’re ahead.
Sometimes you’re an ice cream’ 🍦
🚀 Luke Frake made a superhero-landing on the stage of #gms24 with this powerful slide.
‘We’re all running our own race’ 🏃🏼
- Luke’s a runner. His goal is being healthy and feeling good.
- Usain Bolt’s also a runner. His goal was being the fastest man alive.
Both run, but should Luke then compare his performance with Usain Bolt? Nah. And that’s exactly the point!
I see it all the time. 👇
- ‘What’s the benchmark?’
- ‘They are more innovative’
- ‘We should run 20 tests every day’
People and companies focusing too much on the wins and performance of others, not knowing about the nuances to the stories. The defeats and hard-earned success.
Just seeing the result and promoted image. ✨
And this is a big thing in experimentation as well. Which is why I found Luke’s talk so important.
In experimentation you often hear about how fast-paced and test-driven companies like Booking(dot)com, AirBNB and Spotify are. Running hundreds and thousands of tests.
But they did not get to that point immediately. Testing to increase performance has been built into the DNA of these frontiers in experimentation.
Sure you can get inspired, and you should. Can you use the progress of others as duel for you to catch up? Even better!
But don’t feel a sense of defeat if you don’t get a thousand tests running year 1.
You shouldn’t start by fighting to test everything.
Start by testing more.
And once those results and learnings come in?
You’re hooked. 🪝

Just wrapped up an incredible event at #APOS2023, shedding light on the immense potential for #telcos and #contentproviders in the APAC region! With huge populations and tendencies for consumers to embrace subscriptions products, it's a great opportunity up for grabs.
Our latest report uncovered fascinating trends in Southeast Asia and India:
- 93% of consumers are eager to consolidate their subscriptions into a centralized content hub
- 95% of them expressed stronger brand loyalty to providers offering this service
- 66% would even leave their current telco provider if this service became available elsewhere
Find a link to the full report in the comments below, it’s well worth a read! 👇
At Bango, we're thrilled to be at the forefront of this movement, empowering telcos to lead the way in delivering the coveted #SuperBundling content hubs consumers crave and to scale quickly. Plus, we're opening up new acquisition channels for content providers, connecting them with millions of potential customers.
A massive shoutout to Media Partners Asia for organising such a great event and Rina Siongco from Globe Group for sharing her insights and experiences during our panel. 🙌
