Not only are fewer workers leaving their jobs, fewer are trying to. The Wall Street Journal cites recent data that shows why workers are thinking twice: the job market is tight and switching roles became much less lucrative in the last year-plus. The Journal also notes a recent poll that shows worker satisfaction is up because of solid compensation and flexibility. Piled together, workers stay put because any enticement to leave would have to be dramatic, and those can't-say-no opportunities have become rarer. This is a very eye-opening chart. The data below comes directly from the Bureau of Labor and Statistics. The top red line is the total number of jobs held. The bottom yellow line is what is believed to be the number of full-time jobs held. Historically these two lines always trend up and down together. However, since 2022 total jobs keep going up but the number of full-time jobs is not, in fact there are less full-time jobs in May 2024 then there was in May 2023. This chart shows what we already now. More and more people are having to get a second job in order to keep up with rising costs.

Labour Day: Thinking about People at Work This Labor Day, let's think about the people who work for big companies around the world. Even though these companies may seem to be doing great, a lot of employees are struggling. They feel burned out, stressed, and worried about their jobs. Working long hours, dealing with constant pressure, and not having a clear separation between work and personal life can make people feel really bad. Working from home can worsen this because people feel they always have to be available. Many employees are also worried about job security. Companies might lay them off, or maybe their jobs aren't stable because of the way the economy works. This Labor Day, let's all speak up for what's fair! Employees deserve to be paid well, to work reasonable hours, and to feel supported at work. Companies should care about their employees' well-being, not just their work. After all, employees are people too, with lives and dreams outside of work!
