It's Open Science Week at FAS! We'll be publishing 15 memos outlining how the Biden-Harris Administration can make research more accessible, the outcomes of that research more actionable, and keep American science competitive and groundbreaking. Let's kick things off with our first memo, from Emelia Williams and Katie Hoeberling over at Open Environmental Data Project The EPA should better integrate community data into environmental research and governance by building internal capacity for recognizing and applying such data, facilitating connections between data communities, and addressing misalignments with data standards. #data #openscience https://lnkd.in/eux6Sk5g

Absolutely love these informal opportunities to gather and share resources across experts, explore shared areas of interest, and forge new connections! Yesterday, I facilitated one of our monthly Impact Data Chats. Today I am happy to share a blog with a collated list of environmental justice #databases, #research, #donors, #grants, #AI opportunities and funds available. All of these resources were #crowdsourced from our Impact Data Chat participants. What else are we missing? Please add things in the comments or send me a DM and we will add to the blog for all to access! Everything has changed for me over the past few days with the success of the LinkedIn 4 Environmental Justice newsletter. Because I can see the names of the 4500 people who have subscribed, I know for the first time whom I am talking to. And because a fair number of these are movers and shakers from around the globe, I know that this information is reaching the people who need to hear it. I can't ask for more than that. The other breakthrough has been understanding how to trigger action in response to the horrors I'm reporting. The key to this is what I'm calling Dream Team Advisory Committees. That is, addressing the report and explaining the significance to smaller, specific constituencies within the larger group of subscribers. For example, the $1.2 billion that DOE gave last August to the CCS hoax — that money comes directly from the budgets we need to transform cities, to achieve environmental justice. So instead of writing one omnibus report and hoping for the best, I am reframing it in versions geared toward smaller constituencies, so it is clear to them how this horror is relevant to their work and goals. But basically, this horror happened because Koch Industries could destroy Louisiana and no one would give a shit. This horror could happen because Koch Industries could create Cancer Alley in Louisiana, a river of cancer in Arkansas, then give $100 million to MIT for cancer research and MIT would give them fraudulent science and a clean reputation. Attached here is the draft of the MIT report that I began yesterday, which I will complete and then modify for the two dozen different constituencies who need this information. If you look at the timeline, you'll see how dry the details are, how the horror of what is actually happening doesn't register. That's been my challenge. So in my mind I'm imagining this tragedy as a 10-part Netflix series, with the first episode telling the story of how John Deutch and Ernest Moniz came to write The Future of Coal for the Koch Brothers in 2004, then sell this bridge to the future of fossil fuels to MIT's first woman president, Susan Hockfield, to launch the MIT Energy Initiative. "From my very first days as MIT's president," Hockfield said in 2019, "David Koch became a friend, collaborator, supporter, and enthusiast." I see Julia Roberts in the role. #mitreport #fbi #kochindustries Draft report PDF: https://lnkd.in/eWfmKvZ3

Environmental justice has had remarkable success grabbing headlines and capturing consensus in a world full of competing local and national interests. Environmental narratives fill the headlines and have been highly successful in mobilizing diverse groups in common cause and advocacy for equitable distribution of environmental benefits, burdens, representation, and decision-making. One very powerful tool in this movement is narrative storytelling. #narrativemindworks, #environmentaljustice #environmentalnarratives, Stanford Social Innovation Review People for Community Recovery
