A fantastic initiative that can really transform how people move around their communities. Seattle has built a similar tunnel. Interesting how the idea came about as a way to leverage a safety requirement in building other mass transit and was financing through a fund established by the municipality. This is an example of the magnitude in which we need to shift how we think of and invest in mobility. Build in ways that enable people move about while being both active and social. What would our communities look like if a more equitable 30% of all spending on transportation infrastructure went toward this kind of project and not private vehicles. This would be a siesmic shift toward meeting climate and sustainability goals.

Terrific column by Owen Slot. If we think of sports as communities - and I think we should - then we have two duties/opportunities, to represent and to lead. - Represent the interests of those communities - ie, advocate for the change they want. - And lead those communities in achieving that change. It’s something Chris Boardman - who features in the article - has been able to do for cycling. On this topic - sustainability - there is work to do for sport to get its own house in order, but there is also the opportunity to represent and to lead those communities in achieving change with benefits way beyond sport.

It’s time to rewrite the bike advocacy narrative in SIngapore. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) Singapore is doing a great job in establishing the support for green transportation planning, however culture also has to shift within the agency and in teh community. Below is a great example of how planning and advocacy and mold the landscape of community outreach. SIngapore’s bike culture is rich but devided. The politicians and culture doesn’t count the bulk of cyclist or hear their voice because the word cyclist often doesnt include the elder auntie and uncle, the mom riding to school with kids, the teen on the fixie or the, worker riding inthe am form teh dormitory and domestic going to the hawker center. A rewrite of some basic terms needs to happen. The definition of cyclist, transportation , bicycle, facilities, commute, passenger, and many more that affect traffic codes need an update to include mor inclusive terms that invite people to identify their connection within a cycle culture that is beneficial to the entire community. Singapore SPOKES pledges to advocate and create bike ecosystem of understanding , unity, and visibility that shows all cyclist and all citizens that bikes are indicator species of complete streets and livable cities like frogs are to the global environment. In cities when bikes thrive it is an indicator that the city is thriving. Road safety: a matter of perspective. (original by British Columbia Ministry of Transport)
New study finds 'cycling rather than driving is positively associated with political participation, social participation in organizations, neighbourhood solidarity, and neighbourly helpfulness (i.e. the common good).' 'These findings are significant for policy and planning because the benefits of cycling over driving are more profound and sustainable than previously thought.' 📕 by Harald Schuster: https://lnkd.in/eS-tXmTx (You can read about our thoughts and theories about how this works in our Open Access paper 'Traveling together alone and alone together': https://lnkd.in/dhPvY8K)
