We are absolutely delighted to hear that one of the impact initiatives supported by our Tomorrow Tree Fund, Acción Andina, have been named as one of the winners of The Earthshot Prize 2023! We have been supporting their work through our Tomorrow Tree Fund powered by Milkywire since the fund's initiation in 2020. By working with 11 tree planting and protecting grassroots NGOs from all over the globe, we are able to support local communities, train restoration leaders and create job opportunities. Acción Andina is a grassroots, community-based initiative working across South America to protect native high Andean forest ecosystems for their invaluable benefits to nature and millions of people in the region. Co-founded by non-profit organisations Global Forest Generation and Asociación Ecosistemas Andinos, the initiative revives the ancient Inca principles of “Ayni and Minka”, a deep commitment to working together for the common good. Their approach unites tens of thousands of people in local and indigenous communities to protect and restore the native forests and ecosystems. Work that is vital for the region’s climate resilience, water security, biodiversity, community livelihoods and indigenous culture. The initiative provides critical resources including salary support, project and financial management, as well as technical training for local conservation leaders, organizations and communities to grow long-term land protection and restoration activities. Acción Andina works closely with local communities in the high Andes to carry out conservation activities, building powerful partnerships for future land and resource management. As we mark International Day of Forests this week, I reflect on the vital role forests play in maintaining the health of our planet. This day underscores the need for urgent actions toward the restoration, protection, sustainable management, and utilisation of forests, which are pivotal for combating climate change impacts. Unsustainable practices like unregulated extraction of natural resources, and unsustainable and expanding agricultural methods have led to the degradation and depletion of forests and natural resources. Historically, local communities have had limited control over the natural resources on their lands. In response, at The Nature Conservancy in Africa we adopt a community-led approach to forest conservation. We work with local communities to take the lead in managing their natural resources, collaborating closely with state and non-state actors. Our strategy merges globally proven methods with new scientific insights, Indigenous knowledge, and African innovation, developing solutions that are locally impactful and improve community well-being. Discover how we are actively reducing carbon emissions, restoring and conserving forests, enhancing livelihoods, and generating employment opportunities in Africa by following the link: https://lnkd.in/dgys5VSV

It’s a big day at Aviva Canada as we, in partnership with WWF-Canada, proudly launch the Business and Biodiversity Action Plan. 🌳📘 Our economy is dependent on nature, with at least half of the world’s wealth being moderately or highly dependent on thriving ecosystems. Yet the rapid decline of wildlife populations by 69% in the last 50 years is a stark reminder of the urgent need for action. Every Canadian business, across all industries, plays a pivotal role in this mission. Our Action Plan, offered as a free resource, outlines pragmatic steps towards fostering a healthier natural world and driving sustainable economic growth. 🌎 This journey is more than conservation; it's about transforming into an organization that positively impacts nature. ➡️ Read the full Action Plan here: wwf.ca/actionplan ➡️ Discover more about the initiative: https://lnkd.in/enrsykXx

💚 Great news for nature! The EU Parliament's Environmental Committee voted today to adopt the #NatureRestorationLaw. 🌳 🌿 Although the law has been weakened due to intense lobbying, it will still have a significant impact. At least 3️⃣0️⃣ % of habitats covered by the law—from forests, grasslands, and wetlands to rivers, lakes, and coral beds—must be restored from poor to good condition by 2030, and 9️⃣0️⃣ % by 2050. Member states will need to adopt national restoration plans through an open, transparent, and inclusive process, detailing how they intend to achieve these targets. 💰 Within 12 months after the regulation comes into force, the Commission must submit a report with an overview of financial resources at the EU level, an assessment of the funding needed for implementation, and an analysis of funding gaps. There will be a substantial financing gap to fill, and the private sector has a role to play. At Kosmos Impact , we remain committed to assisting our clients in their efforts to contribute to various nature restoration projects. Whether it's through their investment portfolio or charitable donations. #kosmosimpact #impactinvesting #philanthropy #natureconservation #naturerestoration #biodiversity #climatechange #familyoffice

Our Research and Innovation Grants are dedicated to projects benefiting Scotland’s native woodlands or enhancing understanding of their value. SCOTLAND: The Big Picture's Painting Scotland Yellow Project does just that. In their next phase, they’re creating a film to dispel myths and will be hosting a specialist event for the tree-growing industry, aiming to: 🌳 Reverse the decline of Aspen, a vital component of Scotland’s native woodlands. 🌳 Foster collaboration between growers and aspen experts to address production challenges. 🌳 Raise awareness of aspen’s importance, promoting natural regeneration of existing strands. We’re proud to co-fund this important next step in their project. Emma Razi - Head of Fundraising, SBP, said: "We are extremely grateful to Future Woodlands Scotland. The grant will fund awareness raising activities and collaboration, helping to increase public understanding of the role of aspen as an important contributor to increased biodiversity and climate mitigation." 🏴 Discover more about our Research and Innovation Grants. 👉 https://ow.ly/K1zm50RmhzT #PaintingScotlandYellow #ResearchGrants #InnovationGrants Image: SCOTLAND: The Big Picture

Target 3 of the #gbf includes #oecms - a means to recognise a diverse array of area-based conservation measures that are happening within our landscapes. National discussions like this one in South Africa 🇿🇦 are needed to move OECMs forward and this requires collaborative dialogue and large scale collective action. Importantly, the more clarity and recognition we have for different types of OECMs, the greater the opportunities to create dedicated finance solutions. South Africa’s new tax incentive for species and OECMs is hopefully the first of many innovative finance solutions. Driven to make Climate Action Systemic and Just | Approaching complexity through Collaboration | Into #climateaction #philantropy #partnershipbuilding #sustainableparenting
After more than a year of work, last week Fundación Avina was re-accreditted to Green Climate Fund as a Regional Direct Access Entity. We were one of four re-accredited entities, the only non-profit and non-governmental. I share it today as a trully important land mark. Why? First, because I believe that international climate finance can be a tool for climate justice, mobilizing funds for the places and communities most vulnerable to climate change, and those who can lead stories of change and transformation in our road to net-zero. And the re-accreditation enables Avina to play a role from within in this ecosystem. Secondly, because the re-accreditation was a very detailed due-diligence process, that confirms Avina's capacities to manage funds in a transparent and efficient way, while promoting climate change impacts from its operations to portfolio. Thank you for everyone involved in this process - the very supportive GCF LAC and accreditation teams and the Accreditation Panel. And all Avina coleagues, from today and yesterday who took us here.
