Attended a networking event at The Mechanical Licensing Collective in Nashville to learn a little bit more about the business behind the music industry. Met some cool people including emerging artists, song writers, and music managers. I didn't know music streaming apps like Spotify are required by law to pay a royalty fee to the Mechanical Licensing Collective, a non-profit, every time a song is played. That way, artists and songwriters are then able to connect with the MLC to collect their royalties. I need to make it a habit to start attending more domain specific events whether it's music, real-estate, tech, etc. I think it benefits software engineers and tech founders to dive into fields outside of tech. The culture of each industry is different, but they are similar in how people try to navigate their careers whether they are just starting out or well-established. I try to keep my ears and eyes open to overlapping opportunities that exist between tech and other industries. #nashville

This morning on ausbiz with Nadine Blayney I highlighted the step-change Vinyl Group (ASX:VNL) has been making in the local music industry. Backed by Wisetech founder Richard White, VNL has recently purchased Brag Media, publisher of titles such as Rolling Stone and Billboard. Combined with its existing music data business (Jaxsta), social networking company (Vampr) and retail site (vinyl.com) the company expects to generate almost $10m in revenues in CY24. I also touched on the deluge of financial data coming out in the next 6 weeks with 4C cash flow reports due out by 31 January and 1H24 financial results lodged by the end of February. Investors are looking for results and not promises with companies like EML Group (ASX:EML) and Raiz Invest (ASX: RZI) making the tough, but necessary, decisions to close unprofitable or troublesome international operations. Defining a new philosophy for "music as work", and writing a self-help book about it for musicians: 28,574 / ~80k words until first draft done
"Somebody needs to do the business and commercial work though right? We can't have everyone doing creative work." Not correct. Most of my music industry work has been about systemising admin and commercial work to the point it's a small dev investment away from being automated. But what has been automated instead? Creative work. This is the juxtaposition and lunacy I'm taking a stand against. Music industry, funded by vc from outside sources, prioritises business over art. That's why we all get disillusioned with music industry jobs. That's why artists don't feel supported by the business. The majors killed the people/artistic roles they once had. Now the whole industry is suffering.
