This morning on ausbiz with Nadine Blayney I highlighted the step-change Vinyl Group  (ASX:VNL) has been making in the local music industry.  Backed by Wisetech founder Richard White, VNL has recently purchased Brag Media, publisher of titles such as Rolling Stone and Billboard. Combined with its existing music data business (Jaxsta), social networking company (Vampr) and retail site (vinyl.com) the company expects to generate almost $10m in revenues in CY24. I also touched on the deluge of financial data coming out in the next 6 weeks with 4C cash flow reports due out by 31 January and 1H24 financial results lodged by the end of February. Investors are looking for results and not promises with companies like EML Group (ASX:EML) and Raiz Invest (ASX: RZI) making the tough, but necessary, decisions to close unprofitable or troublesome international operations. When artists think about making money off their music, typically 3 avenues come to mind... Streaming, touring, & merchandise. But there's a 4th avenue I often see a ton of artists overlook. It can be done from the comfort of your own home. And you don't need 100's of thousands of followers to start. I'm talking about brand partnerships. Throughout my career I've been very fortunate to have worked with companies like Antares (Autotune), Native Instruments, Output, BandLab, & many more. My first partnership came when I had less than 6,000 followers too👀 This has provided me with not only additional income, but has snowballed into more & more brand opportunities on an even higher level than just creating content. A Letter from our Founder: Since the very beginning of Musicianly and FretboardGPS, it’s always been my desire to reach songwriters and guitarists where they’re at with products and software designed to both inspire and impact them as musicians. At least that’s how I always imagined it -- when I’m thinking like a guitar player and songwriter. But when I think like a founder, it’s clear now that the direct-to-consumer route isn’t a viable option if we want to accelerate, grow and scale this ocean of data into a business with sustainability and profitability. And we aren’t going to get there by talking only to guitar players and songwriters. I need to act as a founder, not just a musician. And it’s time to be the best founder I can be. "Somebody needs to do the business and commercial work though right? We can't have everyone doing creative work." Not correct. Most of my music industry work has been about systemising admin and commercial work to the point it's a small dev investment away from being automated. But what has been automated instead? Creative work. This is the juxtaposition and lunacy I'm taking a stand against. Music industry, funded by vc from outside sources, prioritises business over art. That's why we all get disillusioned with music industry jobs. That's why artists don't feel supported by the business. The majors killed the people/artistic roles they once had. Now the whole industry is suffering.
