Embarking on the journey to sobriety is often a challenging uphill battle, requiring resilience, determination, and a supportive network. Alcohol abuse can easily be overlooked, however, what may appear as a minor issue can turn dangerous over time. These early warning signs should not be ignored: - Experiencing temporary blackouts or short-term memory loss - Exhibiting signs of irritability and extreme mood swings - Making excuses for drinking, such as to relax, deal with stress, or feel normal - Becoming isolated or distant from friends and family members - Choosing drinking over other responsibilities and obligations #alcoholawarenessmonth #addiction #warningsigns

We know that for many, drinking can lead to changes in behaviour. But for those battling alcoholism, these changes can linger and disrupt daily life. Here are some signs to look out for: • Being secretive or dishonest about alcohol use • Pulling away from loved ones • Drinking at inappropriate times, like first thing in the morning • Losing interest in things you used to enjoy • Drinking heavily alone • Ignoring the negative effects on home, work, or social life • If you or someone you care about shows these signs, it could be a sign of alcohol dependency. 🙇♂️How to protect your kids from alcohol abuse!🥂 It all starts with setting a good example. Our children mimic what they see. If you come home from work and have a beer every day—something I did often—what are you teaching them? That alcohol is a reward after a hard day's work. This isn't inherently good or bad, but it's what they observe and copy, shaping their belief system. If you have alcohol prominently displayed at home and offer it to guests, even during children’s birthdays, it becomes normal for them. They start to associate celebrations with alcohol, believing it to be essential. We have the power to change this narrative. By choosing healthier ways to relax and celebrate, we can instill positive habits and beliefs in our children. Show them that unwinding and having fun don’t need to revolve around a drink. Your actions today can help your children develop a healthy relationship with alcohol in the future. Let’s strive to be the example they need. It can be challenging to recognise . 1. Thanks to the gaslighting and manipulation techniques 2. Isolation which does not allow outsiders to observe signs of abuse 3. Inherent shame which makes them convince themselves that it's not that bad 4. The cycle of violence confused the victim 5. Normalisation of the abusive behaviour over time 6. Childhood experiences where such behaviour was normalised 7. Cultural and family pressures which normalise such behaviour . While people usually start using substances because they like the effect, but what drives continued use in spite of all kinds of harm is anything but. I don't necessarily like to call it a cry for help, but abuse of substances are almost always meeting a need, and that emotional need is always legitimate. If you're struggling to have compassion with a loved one abusing substances, figuring out the the real need the substance use addresses can be the first step to having compassion. It's also a crucial piece of information if you want to be able to have a positive influence on the use. Because supporting your loved one in meeting that need in healthier ways is a really impactful way to have a positive influence on the use. 💗💗💗💗💗 I offer an online workshop to support families: "5 Ways Families Can Positively Influence a Loved One's Substance Use." Have a #tween or #teen that you want to begin talking to about drugs and alcohol? But are you stuck with where to begin? Let watching a video together help open the conversation. Here's a short 2 minute video that helps to share some important information for tweens and teens to know, but it also helps explain why they are more likely to engage in risky behavior and give in to peer pressure. Approaching a drug or alcohol conversation using this video as a springboard can help you ask questions and share concerns with your child and help them better understand why you are trying to keep them safe. Because your preteen or teen needs to understand your involvement comes from a place of safety and not from a place of distrust, or they will shut down on you. Helping your tween or teen understand the biology behind what is going on in the brain may help them make better choices when faced with peer pressure for drugs and alcohol. https://lnkd.in/gh3TVHQD For more on #parenting follow #parentingteens #parentingtweens #hardconversations #talkaboutdrugs #teendruguse #teenalcoholuse #raisingteens

How do domestic abusers distort their children's thinking - and how can children break free of the distortions? I've written a new article for Decoding Coercive Control with Dr Emma Katz that looks at the distorted ways of thinking created by perpetrators and the harms they cause. It focuses in particular on the ways in which children react when a perpetrator attempts to distort their ways of thinking. From a professional angle, the article also examines how people and systems currently leave children vulnerable to the distorted ways of thinking created by the perpetrator - and how professionals can instead begin to enable children to break free from those ways of thinking. Finally, using real-life stories drawn from my research, the article considers how children developing a clearer-eyed understanding of what the perpetrator was really like, and breaking free from the perpetrator's distorted ways of thinking, can help to enhance their mental health, confidence, and general well-being.
