"Outside of incarceration, community health care professionals and community-based social service agencies should partner with community corrections departments to address structural factors and treat SUDs. Further advocacy is needed to realize the ethical necessity of SUD treatment, including MOUD for adults in custody, destigmatize SUD within the criminal legal system, convince state leaders of the cost-effectiveness of implementing MOUD, and couple state-level mandates with funding and technical assistance" Addiction Professionals of North Carolina (APNC) IHI Joint Commission ACGME ABIM Foundation AAMI Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine ECRI UAB School of Health Professions #carceral state #new Jim Crow #ruralhealthcare

Keeping parents out of jail and prison is critical to protect children from the known harms of parental incarceration, including: ➡️ Traumatic loss marked with feelings of social stigma and shame and trauma-related stress ➡️ More mental health problems and elevated levels of anxiety, fear, loneliness, anger, and depression ➡️ Less stability and greater likelihood of living with grandparents, family friends, or in foster care ➡️ Difficulty meeting basic needs for families with a member in prison or jail ➡️ Lower educational achievement, impaired teacher-student relationships, and more problems with behavior, attention deficits, speech and language, and learning disabilities ➡️ Problems getting enough sleep and maintaining a healthy diet ➡️ More mental and physical health problems later in life ➡️ Incarceration punishes more than just individuals; entire families suffer the effects long after a sentence ends. source: @prisonpolicyinitiative

(Part-2) Accessing VA Healthcare Services: One significant concern for justice-involved Veterans is the continuity of healthcare services provided by the VA. While incarcerated, Veterans may still receive necessary medical care through correctional facility healthcare systems. However, it is important to note that VA healthcare services may be temporarily interrupted during this period. Upon release, Veterans are encouraged to reestablish contact with their local VA facilities to resume receiving comprehensive healthcare services. Reintegration Programs and Support: To facilitate a successful transition back into society, justice-involved Veterans can benefit from various reintegration programs and support services. The VA offers specialized programs aimed at addressing the unique challenges faced by this population. These programs encompass vocational rehabilitation, employment assistance, mental health counseling, substance abuse treatment, housing support, and peer support networks. By actively engaging in these programs, justice-involved Veterans can enhance their chances of successful reintegration and reclaiming their lives. #incarceration #vabenefits #veteranshelpingveterans #veteransupport

Children who have parents incarcerated often face significant challenges that can have a profound impact on their well-being. The absence of a parent due to incarceration can lead to feelings of loss, abandonment, and emotional distress. These children may experience increased levels of stress, anxiety, and depression, as well as feelings of shame or stigma associated with having a parent in prison. The disruption of the family unit can also result in financial instability, housing insecurity, and difficulties accessing essential resources and support systems. Moreover, children with incarcerated parents may struggle academically, socially, and emotionally, which can hinder their overall development and future opportunities. It is crucial to provide these children with the necessary support, resources, and care to help them navigate these challenges and thrive despite the circumstances they face. 💡Do you know a child whose loved one is incarcerated?

Transforming Lives: A Collaborative Approach to Mental Health and Rehabilitation by Central Adelaide South Australian Prison Health Service, University of South Australia, Australian Teletrial Program (ATP) As we navigate the complex challenges of #mentalhealth within the corrections system, it’s heartening to see rays of hope breaking through. People in custody often grapple with profound depression and anxiety, and finding effective interventions is crucial for their well-being and rehabilitation. Thanks to a groundbreaking initiative and our incredible nurses who have completed Behavioral Activation training, we are making strides in understanding how we can better support the mental health of those in custody. 🏥💡 We have embarked on trials to assess the efficacy of Behavioral Activation, a promising intervention for #depression and #anxiety. But what truly sets this project apart is the active involvement of people in custody as members of the consumer advisory group. Their strategic input on developing plain language resources, aiding in recruitment, and refining workbooks is invaluable. 👥📚 This collaboration is not just about improving mental health; it's about dismantling the cycle of recidivism and giving individuals a genuine chance at returning to their normal activities and lives. It's a testament to what we can achieve when we work together, valuing the voices and experiences of those we aim to help. 🔄❤️ Thanks to the Department for Correctional Services for their continued support in enabling and supporting patient-centred research in prison. Here’s to breaking barriers, one step at a time. #MentalHealthAwareness #CriminalJusticeReform #InnovationInHealthcare #CommunityEngagement
Prison nurses are receiving specialist psychosocial training as part of a new UniSA research project to support the mental health needs of people in custody in rural South Australia. Conducted in partnership with Central Adelaide Local Health Network (CALHN) South Australian Prison Health Service (SAPHS), the trial hopes to show that specialised skills built through an online education platform can help frontline nurses deliver evidenced-based mental health treatments within the correctional health system. ⚖️ Last week we shared our firm's recent publication regarding CARE Court inside the esteemed Western City Magazine and one question you may have is, "What is the process and eligibility of CARE Court?" Expediting Intervention: CARE Court aims to prevent unnecessary psychiatric hospitalizations and incarcerations. It targets those with severe mental illness, offering voluntary CARE agreements or court-ordered CARE plans, inclusive of behavioral services and housing resources. The Petition Process: The initiation of CARE Court proceedings can stem from various sources, including police, outreach workers, and family members. Eligibility hinges on strict criteria, ensuring that only those who can most benefit from the program are included. Judicial Oversight: The CARE Court process provides for judicial oversight, offering support and legal counsel to individuals. In cases where voluntary participation fails, the court may refer individuals to conservatorship as a last resort, emphasizing the preference for voluntary treatment. 🔑 Re-entry planning programs have significant benefits. 🎯 💡 They ensure that individuals leaving prison are prepared for what comes next. ✅ 🔄 Without a plan, it's easy to fall back into old patterns and end up back in prison. ❌ 📚 I learned this the hard way - after five stints in prison and multiple failed attempts at reintegration, preparation made all the difference. 💪 ✨ The first time I left armed with plans, goals, and visions for my future was also the last time I walked out of those gates. 👏 🏘️ Whether it's arranging housing or transportation... 🧩 Acquiring new skills or finding employment... 😌 Or accessing mental health services... Re-entry planning equips individuals with everything they need to succeed on the outside! 🎉 #reentryplanning #prisonreform #secondchances #mentalhealthawareness
