I love what these young women are saying: we need more brilliant women to BE brilliant women. The word BE really struck me. As a society we are still on a journey towards true Equality. The Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen asked: what equality are we talking about? One can specify Equality in a broad and inclusive way, encompassing rights, liberties, opportunities, income, wealth, and the social basis of self-respect. These specifications are still concerned with doing and having as opposed to an equal state of Being. By no means do I argue against the importance of equal doing and having, I only wonder what it means for a human to truly BE equal? I find myself reflecting on the feminine and masculine that lies within each of us. Not proportionately channeling both of these energies throws us off balance. An unbalanced individual co-creates an unbalanced world. Both these energies are universal and co-exist in all of us. Each has strengths and weaknesses. Though we may have a dominant predisposition both these polarities are well developed in self-realized individuals. A dominant polarity may express through genetics (nature, physical strength in the narrow sense are typically more correlated with the xy chromosome), however, subsequently societal conditioning is likely to fully suppress the non-dominant polarity (nurture, boy's dont cry). As a gay man I have experience with this dance. My masculine energy is about self-preservation, it is non-emotive, strong but closed, rational, it demands to be in control, it wants to assert external power, it wants to expand outwards. My feminine energy is intuitive, healthily emotive, vulnerable, open, healing, giving, nurturing, sacrificing, it wants to collaborate with power, in many ways inward and contracting. There is a tension between these two energies but they are complimentary in the best version of myself. My journey has been to seek balance in these in my self expression. As I work to consolidate my own influence towards a better world, I find myself relying on my masculine energy more and female energy less. Society and existing power structures seem to revere masculine energy. I reflect on these things, because I see a dangerously broken world. I believe an imbalance of masculine energy in the collective self is what got us here. I think the way forward is for more feminine energy to be expressed from within our societal power structures (the vehicles of co-creation). I wonder whether we are embracing and empowering both of these energies equally and equitably? Are we inviting the feminine into our Being or are we simply inviting females into our doing and having with an expectation to assimilate towards a masculine energy and expression?
Thank you Shelley Zalis. We as moms, aunts, daughters, women, colleagues, sisters, industry game changers, and leaders needed to see this video. #closethedreamgap

Work-life balance is the somewhat antiquated term we often use to describe our working lives as women - particularly as mothers. The concept of balance puts the onus solely on our shoulders where we carry the physical and mental loads of our lives with us at all times. This newer concept of work-life integration really takes some of that pressure off where we are able to be fully present in each part of our multifaceted lives exactly when we need to be. Take a look at the second part of our Women in Financial Services WHM series which explores the topic of work-life integration and how these highly successful women use it as their superpower in their daily lives.
In celebration of Women's History Month, we are spotlighting women within the Financial Services industry as they share advice on work-life integration and how they incorporate it into their own lives. For Jessica Stidom, Customer Experience Supervisor, being able to participate in the Women in Manufacturing “Moms in MFG” virtual conference allowed her to hear the perspective of other working mothers in manufacturing. Her favorite breakout session was “Letting Go of Mom Guilt”, where several participants shared similar struggles balancing motherhood, and for Jessica, it was refreshing to feel validated by other women in different stages of life and in their careers. 💪 👏 #WeAreAFL #womeninmanufacturing #momsinmanufacturing
