We are thrilled to host our first-ever Montgomery County Public Schools #SummerRise High School student interns this year! A heartfelt thanks to the MCPS Department of Partnerships for this incredible opportunity for both the students and host organizations. We had our first in-person gathering with the high school interns at the REI Systems Sterling last week. The day was filled with fun and learning. Students enjoyed lunch with REI leadership, listened to inspiring speakers, interacted with our #FDA account's top architects and program managers, and toured the office. We are honored to support this initiative and proud to play a part in building our future generations! #REIsystemsLIFE #FDA #students #interns

A single event won't gift your students lasting, sustainable skills, no matter how fantastic that program is. Student organizations, internships, leadership programs and volunteer opportunities all have the power to propel students' classroom success & workforce readiness—but only if each experience is thoughtfully connected & designed with specific learning outcomes in mind. Enter co-curricular frameworks. A well-crafted framework will: 🔗 align campus activities with your institution's mission 📊 allow you to assess student learning 🤩 showcase the value of engagement 🪞 empower students to self-reflect & articulate their skills development 🎯 support institutional accreditation through learning outcomes Not sure where to start? “It’s been a remarkable year for the Calvin University School of Business, and the best is yet to come,” said Jim Ludema, Dean of the Calvin University School of Business. “Our students are analyzing case studies in the classroom, working on team projects in the MBA, starting their own businesses, and adding value to companies through capstone projects and internships. Through these experiences, they are developing the knowledge, skills, and character they need to succeed and become innovative, ethical leaders in their future organizations and communities.” Read more about the 12 milestones in the past 12 months since the opening of the new Calvin University School of Business building. https://lnkd.in/ghBqFxHn

Okay, CSLD hasn't posted in a while, so what's up with the pic of the large field? A lot, actually. The large field at our North Woods Challenge Course is finally getting a much-needed layer of mulch and our staff are excited. You see, once students graduate, we don't get the summers off. CSLD Coordinator Alison Jackson Frasier is usually on the course facilitating teambuilding for groups or focusing on maintenance. The work doesn't end! What else does CSLD do over the summer? 🌞 End-of-year reports/budget things, you know, the fun stuff 🌞 New Student Orientation: lots and lots of talking with new students and families/supporters 🌞 Still teaching: We're here for our LDR 417 Internship students 🌞 Still facilitating: We have several #CliftonStrengths workshops lined up for other departments' professional development needs in the coming months 🌞 Always planning: Things like Leadership Institute Peer Leader Training and the schedule for the full program ... reserving space for our fall Day of Leadership ... and making lists for "future us" (we'll get to fall class planning by August, for sure) 🌞 And yes, our staff take some time off as well, to rest and recharge. We wholeheartedly believe naps are productive. How's everyone's summer so far?

In April, I received two calls, from two different families sharing that their HBCU college students had either a job or internship in Charlotte but was unable to find housing. I tried to help find housing but couldn’t find anything under $2,000 per month. So I opened up my home and had the honor of hosting these two amazing young ladies for the summer as they learned to navigate corporate and professional spaces. As a leader and executive coach, I learned a few key take-a-ways: 1) Creating a strong and diverse talent pipeline is critical to the sustainability of an organization which must start while they’re in college. 2) If your company engages in out-of-state internships, ensure that housing is apart of the package because in most cities temporary housing is difficult to obtain. This can make the internship opportunity unattainable which ultimately can change their trajectory. 3) The Gen Z generation is totally different so their voice is critical when decisions are being made in the workplace. Almost every day I learned something new from them. 4) When placing an intern, expose them to real work, not just stapling papers because they’re ready and capable for more. Both had “real work,” which allowed me to see their growth. 5) Lean into HBCU students and be intentional because often the opportunities and exposure are not the same. This will help level the playing field and encourage diversity. 6) If you work for a major corporation or business, consider enrolling in the NC Governors HBCU Internship program which provides interns with an immersive professional experience that will increase their competitiveness in the job market. It’s a paid opportunity which they need! https://lnkd.in/g5aqkjMd So was it different suddenly living with two 20-ish year olds? Absolutely but each day I was inspired by their intelligence, fearlessness and focus which I am confident that they will one day be phenomenal leaders in work spaces and I can’t wait to see it! #bethevillage https://lnkd.in/gyH9UV8H

Joseph Steigerwaldt, a senior in finance, has dedicated his last three years to being a student leader, helping those around him succeed. 👏 Joseph serves as a Business Learning Team (BLT) peer mentor, helping incoming first-year students transition successfully into Ivy. He excitingly said, "The most rewarding part has been witnessing my mentees thrive professionally. From internship acceptance posts on LinkedIn to gaining leadership roles across Ivy and campus organizations, seeing my mentees grow from their freshman year has been exciting to watch." #NationalMentoringMonth

Hi network, Today, I attended the Young Professionals' Black Leaders of the Future event at Leicester Square, London. It was hosted by Dan M. and featured many senior managers and apprentices from global firms, whom I was honored to engage in enlightening conversations with. This was my first solo networking event, and it was slightly daunting; however, I'm extremely grateful to have overcome this feeling, having received vast insight as well as motivation to keep going with my apprenticeship process. Below are 5 invaluable points I took from today that may enlighten your thought process: 1)Stay true to yourself during any application process; employers can tell when a candidate is trying to project a certain personality. 2)"It's not who you know; it's who knows you." - This emphasises the importance of being known by others rather than just knowing influential people. 3)"When you tell a powerful story, you have the power to paint a captivating story in someone's mind." 4)Think big, start small, move fast! 5)Reframe failure into "What have I learned?" Turn your failure into action. #networkingevent #careerdevelopment
