When was the last time you thought about the events that got you to where you are now in your career?
I was just hired by a hospital in Idaho to train their entire staff on the importance of the patient perspective. Interestingly, a hospital is where I got my "start" in the speaking industry, as a patient facing mortality in a fight with a tumor wrapped around my brainstem. There I learned the critical, even life-saving importance of what I call "Interactional leadership", creating positive impact through intentional 1-1 interactions.
Successful healthcare environments don't just rely on expertise, they require #humanconnection and interaction at a higher, more thoughtful level than day-to-day interactions. Because nothing is normal for the patient fighting for life. No interaction, no matter how small, is trite. Every person who walks in the room has great power, and I daresay, responsibility, to help, lift, and encourage the patient, regardless of their job or task.
Some of the most impactful experiences in my fight for life weren't with professionals high on the organizational chart, they were with CNAs, housekeepers, food service workers, and my favorite, Tyson, the young man with hair like curly fries, a phlebotomist who woke me every morning at 4am to take my blood. Somehow, his were the only needle pokes that never hurt.
In patient, as well as customer care, it's not just about what you know, but how you engage with those you serve. From truly listening, to knowing 'exactly what to say' for #effectivecommunication, every interaction shapes the patient or customer experience and outcomes.
Going into a hospital, this time as a speaker and leader, feels like I have come full circle, both back to the beginning, and heading into the future. A future I still have because of medical personnel who take their roles seriously, and do ALL that is needed, not just for "patient outcomes", but for person behind the patient.
How have intentional interactions changed your life?
