Time for another #FromTheDockFriday (although, this Friday's video was filmed inside my home office). Earlier this week, I caught a bucket list fish: the rare, melanistic alligator gar. These fish make up about 1/10,000 gar born, and many don't live to adulthood, so catching one is a very rare privilege, and if you want to do it, you need to be persistent, patient, and smart. It's the same way when you are looking for those "unicorn" candidates. Whether it's a rare skill set, a high-level leader, or just someone who is hugely impactful, you need to be persistent, patient, and smart when trying to recruit them to your team. Family businesses play a vital role in the Australian private sector, contributing approximately 55% of the country's employment opportunities. I recently spoke with the Sydney Morning Herald, to share my personal journey as the co-CEO of COS, founded by my father, Dominique Lyone. When the time came, my sister Amie and I happily took on the joint leadership role, capitalising on our individual strengths and skills. In this article I talk about what it’s like working in a family business and why it's essential to take the time to understand the business thoroughly before embracing this unique career path. I share some advice for anyone considering a role in a family business, regardless of whether you're a family member or an outside hire.
