How will the public education system respond? "In 390 districts included in The Post’s analysis, there was at least one home-schooled child for every 10 in public schools during the 2021-2022 academic year, the most recent for which district-level federal enrollment data are available. That’s roughly quadruple the number of districts that had rates that high in 2017-2018, signifying a sea change in how many communities educate their children and an urgent challenge for a public education system that faced dwindling enrollment even before the pandemic." #education #publicschools #homeschooling #privateschools #teachers #economicimpact #socialimpact #students #studentexperience #educationindustry

Yesterday I posted an article about student absenteeism and I so appreciated the the thoughtful comments and discourse it generated. Today there is an op-ed in the NY Times that provides more on the topic of student absenteeism plus info. on COVID, students, and learning loss. Note in the article how it makes mention of some ways to address learning loss and how good teachers make a difference—no surprises there. #EDLINKS #EducatingTheNewHumanity to #AwakenAndLiftHumanity to #SeeGoodDoBetter

Young people are eager to learn about education-to-career pathways—but are caring adults ready and willing to encourage students to take the road less traveled? In our last resource with American Student Assistance #SuccessRedefined, we presented data from young people who have chosen a pathway other than a traditional college degree. In our latest report, #BeyondDegrees, we surveyed parents, educators, and guidance counselors—all critical stakeholders in a young person's #education journey—to understand their awareness and perception of education-to-career pathways. From there, we recommend ways in which these key players can help kids understand and navigate ALL their options after #highschool. Tens of studies have demonstrated the strong relationships between high absenteeism and slower academic growth, increased social and emotional challenges, lower graduation rates, and poorer post-secondary outcomes. And while the hope was that declining attendance rates would recover naturally post-pandemic, 2022-2023 data released by a handful of states show little to no signs of improvement. PowerSchool's Attendance Intervention solution, which promotes regular, positive family engagement, can help. #powerschool #attendance #absenteeism #NAEP https://lnkd.in/eZTkDJxU

How do you plan on tackling disparities in educational competency among different demographics of students? 🚀Invest in Pre-K access to attack the achievement gap at the onset of early childhood education. The Blueprint for Maryland’s Future - Pillar 1 will give Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) funding to mandate expanded Pre-K access. However, MCPS will have to allocate additional resources in this area. 🚀Students who fail to reach DIBELS/MAP-R/MSDE requirements for proficiency must enter an extended learning curriculum. 🚀Reform our IEP504 Program to offer more individualized learning opportunities. Parents feel hopeless after being refused an IEP504 due to their child not meeting requirements. 🚀Invest in non-governmental agencies (NGOs) that offer literacy coaches and math tutors. 🚀Offer Wage Parity for Para-Educators to shrink the size of classrooms and induce individualized learning opportunities.
