Day 6 of #20daylinkedinchallengewithdestiny I received my first paycheck as a PM when I started working as an intern. I met my boss in quite the oddest circumstance and safe to say, I got the job! It was really refreshing as I was being paid for interning and also being trained as well. My company paid for the courses I took and I made up my mind to do my best. I guess I’m doing something right. Especially seeing as after I interned for 6 months, I got retained as a staff. I have been working for a year plus now. I am hoping and waiting for the day I become so badass in product management, especially in the fintech industry and I can start having consulting gigs too. Moral lesson: Money can be a motivator. You can really like what you’re doing and on some days you’d be so tired to even open up your laptop. In this instance, money as an incentive comes in. I was working and earning well and this, I made sure my output was very good too! (My supply of funds cannot be cut short please). What is your source of motivation, and why is it so? A Great Product Manager will always consider changing any setback into an opportunity! In fact, perhaps there aren't any real losses - just different ways to win! Here are some of my life's examples: I got my first IT internship when I was fired from an English Teacher position (as an abroad student), which led me to find a different job. I got my first real job when the company that promised me an internship bailed out and I was forced into job search mode. I coded from scratch an internal, amateur as hell, internal CRM there when I didn't have the tools to find clients' data quickly. It was still used there 4 years ago when I left. When I got my master's, I had a choice: A local industry job (and give back scholarship money they paid me), keep on with the job I had since the last paragraph, or start a Ph.D. track. I decided to take 2 out of 3, paid back the scholarship, and told myself 6 months later I would choose 1 of them and leave the other. 7 years later I became a doctor while working remotely full time! I started to look for a better job when someone else got the promotion I thought I deserved. That got me to OLX. I got the idea for my Great Product Manager course while sitting at home with a broken arm. Being unhappy in Poland, me and my wife started to look for a job abroad. Don't let the setbacks stop you. There are far too few product manager internships and junior product positions today. 😢 Most recruiters are looking for experienced folks. If you are an aspiring product manager or seeking an entry-level position, here's a hack - build a product to show competence. How to do this? ✍ 1. Find a problem area. Please keep it simple. 2. Determine your target customer. The target customer should be easily accessible. 3. To build the product, use a no-code tool such as Flutterflow https://flutterflow.io/ and Bubble https://bubble.io/. You don't need any coding experience. 4. Test the product with your target customers. 5. Apply your A/B experimentation and testing knowledge. 6. Iterate the product based on customer feedback. 7. Work with software engineers, product designers, marketing professionals, etc., where possible, to understand what that working relationship would look like. 8. Optional: Build a product in the industry/problem space you are most interested in and use modern technology. When applying for jobs, your experience in the industry and modern technology is typically a bonus. By building a product, you show competence and the ability to turn an idea into an impactful solution - this is what recruiters look for. P.S.: This activity could take weeks, so while you apply for jobs, set aside time daily or weekly to work on this. "The final months of my graduate degree were a struggle", how many recent graduates have you heard this from? Let me correct myself, how many recent graduates on some sort of a visa have you heard this from? I've been there and so have some of my closest friends.   The current job market for aspiring product managers has been scary; even more so with an inflow of experienced, knowledgeable and wise product folks available in the market. Do we new grads even stand a chance? At the risk of sounding too optimistic, I'd say why not!   Although I wasn’t successful in landing a core Product role in time, I felt the need to understand the perspective of Managers hiring for Product roles. I spoke to a few product managers including but not limited to: Hemang Dhamija, Anshul K. and cant thank them enough for their insights, honesty and forthrightness. I've tried to consolidate these into three categories: 1/Product skills 2/ Behavioral Skills 3/Other advise Product Skills:  1. Does the candidate understand Customer Discovery? • The candidate is expected to understand and figure out the customers pain points, segment customers based on the need of the situation. • Taking customer interviews, asking the right questions or atleast moving in the direction of the right scope of the problem.   2. Product Development & Customer Empathy • Customer is always the primary focus while developing a product and identifying the need of this based on the situation is key for a Product manager. • Multiple customer segments and a handful of customer personas, the ability to understand why and how each of these need the product   3. Does the candidate understand and interpret Data? • There are multiple ways to slice, dice and represent the data - does the candidate understand and apply that? • Considering both Qualitative and Quantitative data while making decisions • Are the customers at the center of the candidate's analysis?   4. How well versed is the candidate with curating an engaging data story? • Different stakeholders require different details and level of attention, candidates ought to recognize that. • Align all stakeholders to the Product's vision and goal.   5. Prioritization with Precision • Strong prioritization skills are vital in the fast-paced product management world. • Aligning tasks with business goals to optimize resources and maximize impact is an essential skill for Product Managers.   6. Domain Expertise - Be a Subject Matter Expert (SME) • Highlighting a deep understanding of the industry, its nuances and challenges can help a candidate shine brighter than their peers. • Demonstrating that the candidate can grasp the domain and hit the ground running quickly to be a value add is essential.   Its an amalgamation of Hard skills, soft skills and a little bit of luck, but hey - keep that head up and keep hustling!   Complete article: https://lnkd.in/eq--gEQa #productmanagement #interviewing

It's important to note that this path is not guaranteed, and individuals may take different routes or face unexpected challenges along the way. Networking, mentorship, continuous learning, and seizing opportunities are all important factors in achieving career success in the tech industry.

You applied to the degree so you could move But they want local experience... Try these (but not #3) 1. Local internships 🌏 -> It’s nice to have your goal city at the top of your “work experience” section -> They can be challenging to get though, so I recommend looking for companies where you aren’t competing against thousands of others 2. Start a company 💼 -> Grab a few friends in your program and start something that interests you. It doesn’t (and probably shouldn’t) be the next Google. Just start something where you offer a service and find one client -> Give yourself the position you want to work in full time after graduating, rather than CEO or Founder. It’s easier to understand if you were a Product Manager at a startup and are now applying for the same role 3. Go to LinkedIn and complain loudly 📢 -> It doesn’t get you anywhere -> BUT it feels great and is technically doing something Whatever you do, just make sure to blame recruiters and AI for not getting your resume through! #international #mastersdegree #jobapplication

GRADUATE STUDENTS... Do you know what can help you find a job you want? Figuring out what type of environment you want to be in. Let me explain. Working at a large corporation like JP Morgan or Lufthansa can be great for reputation and for structured training programmes. I'm not taking anything away from these (honestly, I've applied to plenty, including one of these two examples). BUT... Working at a startup or scale-up can give you much broader experience and greater responsibility from the get-go, as well as a much closer relationship with a mentor who has been there and done the things you aspire to. The best part? In a startup environment, everyone is still figuring things out, which gives you more of a chance to define your own role. Imagine: You find a small company still finding its feet and think "I could really help this company expand in X country, as I have the cultural understanding and am good at presenting and selling products." If you reach out to the founder or hiring manager and tell them exactly why you think they should hire you, versus simply asking if they are looking for someone to join their team, which do you think will make the biggest impact and give you the best shot? And not only have you made an immediate impression, you have also already defined your role, so if you ARE offered the job, you're already on the track you want. Looking for a job is difficult but with effort, it can be more worthwhile. THINK SMART and WORK HARD.
