May is #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says mental illness can affect employees in several ways including negatively altering job performance, productivity, communication with coworkers, physical capacity to function, and personal well-being. Ensuring employees are healthy benefits both your organization and your team members. When employees know their well-being is supported, they’re more productive and both mentally and physically healthier. Employers can do many things to support their employees including normalizing mental health conversations, burnout prevention, employee mental health support, and communicating mental health benefits. You can’t ‘Yoga’ your way to creating employee health. Having seen the best of organisations going wrong with their mental health initiatives, this article is a great read which shares the mechanisms to bring its true value to life. I personally get shocked when mental health leaders in the org talk about: 1. Running a Yoga workshop for a team which is alread burnt out. Especially when the team that you are organising it for sits in a different geography, running a virtual Yoga workshop by forcing your employees to login in their late evening hours will only worsen the situation. Don’t make it a ☑️Tick in the box excercise for yourself. 2. It’s not about running a random online Painting session forcing Employees to prioritise it over the customer. Again, Don’t make it a ☑️Tick in the box excercise for yourself. 3. It’s not about sharing what food or flower they like and post it’s picture …. Don’t make it a ☑️Tick in the Box excercise. Mental health is a serious responsibility. It’s about knowing deeper about what your employees care for. It’s about challenging those intrinsic problems in the system and finding a solution. Make the core factors in the organisation right. #mentalhealth

The article is correct in saying that organizations need to create a culture that supports the mental health of their employees. However, it is important to remember that employees and leaders bring their mental health issues with them from the society, and these issues can further infect the organization. Therefore, it is necessary to address mental health issues at the societal level, which is only possible through yoga. Yoga is a fundamental practice that helps people to cope with difficult situations, as Krishna taught Arjuna in the Bhagavad Gita on the battlefield, where he was to fight with his relatives. What can be a more difficult situation than that? It is important to note that Arjuna, despite of all odds like imitation of resources etc, won the battle because of calmness of mind which resulted in his efficient performance.

While the debate on Advanced artificial intelligence (AI) in the workplace continues to gain momentum, the impact of AI on mental well-being of employees is usually not on the most debated aspects of the subject. Companies across all industries and geographies will need to work collaboratively to support their employees otherwise we are potentially starting at another pandemic - and this time, even remotely working will not be of any help. Some of the factors that are most impacting employees particularly those in mid ranks are 1. Job Insecurity: The implementation of advanced AI systems has started to create concerns about job security among employees. 2. Workload and Burnout: AI is streamling processes and increasing productivity, but it is also creating unrealistic expectations and higher workloads. 3. Skill Obsolescence: As AI technology advances rapidly, some job roles are becoming irrelevant. Impacted employees are experiencing feelings of inadequacy, leading to lower self-esteem and job dissatisfaction. 4. Social Isolation: With AI systems taking over certain tasks, employees are having lesser interactions with other colleagues and customers, leading to increased social isolation. Lack of social connection and support at work is starting to contribute to feelings of loneliness, decreased job satisfaction, and mental health issues. if this pandemic is not prevented in time, not just the workplace culture, ethos and productivity is going to get impacted but implications are more widespread and puts entire construct of society at large at risk.
