In my book The Enterprise Data Catalog I describe the importance and difficulties of accessing data from a company IT landscape, once found in the data catalog: " There is a difference between search engines for the web and data catalogs. On the web, when you search and find things you want to access, it’s just a matter of clicking the link in the search result, which takes you directly to the web page, the source. That’s the true beauty of Tim Berners-Lee’s original vision of the World Wide Web from the early 1990s: the web is open—everyone can access everything, and everything can be linked together. In a company, you’re just not that lucky—yet. When you search and find things in the data catalog, you click the link, which takes you to a detailed description of the asset you are curious about. But at the metadata level only. To gain access to the actual data, you have to click a button that says “Request,” and from that point on, several things can happen.
