Discover The Human Essence of Watchmaking by FHH - Fondation Haute Horlogerie The Fondation Haute Horlogerie (FHH) is hosting its next cultural event with the exhibition "Watches and Talents", from June 6th to September 2nd, 2024. This exhibition highlights the craftsmanship of eight talented professionals working behind the watchmaking scenes, through video portraits filmed by director Thibault Vallotton, presented alongside everyday objects of their quotidian, each telling their unique story. "At FHH, we continually offer new exhibitions and cultural activities designed to appeal to everyone, highlighting the watch as an object of art and culture. But with the Watches and Talents' exhibition, we reveal the lives behind the scenes, reminding us that the beating heart of watchmaking remains human. Through this work, we hope to present watchmaking and its professions from a different perspective and inspire new vocations" says Aurélie Streit, Vice-President of the Fondation Haute Horlogerie. Let's take a philosophical look at the biggest watch-world event taking place in Geneva. People have always been interested in and attracted to the biggest, fastest, most complicated, and most beautiful things and objects, although this is very individual. From a pragmatic point of view, such things can be more useful, give an advantage, have a greater emotional impact, and give satisfaction. On the other hand, a lot also depends on social and cultural contexts and personality. After all, many of the people who seek to obtain and consume these things want to be socially recognised or considered important. So we are all compelled to strive to create meaning in our daily activities, and life is full of new challenges that push us into new territories. On the surface, everything seems to be migrating into virtual space, with AI rapidly expanding its competencies and powers. But Watches & Wonders 2024 proves once again that there is a balance in life and that the world is not evolving asymmetrically. Just like the digital virtual space, the world of micromechanics, driven by heritage, experience, talent, craftsmanship, creativity, and the most meticulous handiwork, is climbing to new heights. New masterpieces from IWC Schaffhausen, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Piaget, and other manufactures have proved this once again, and Vacheron Constantin presented the world's most complicated watch. Comprising 63 horological complications and 2,877 components, it surpasses the record already held by the Maison with Reference 57260. This world-first timepiece is distinguished by the fact that it features a genuine Chinese perpetual calendar. Given the particularities of this lunisolar calendar characterised by a complex and irregular cycle, the mechanical programming of in-house Calibre 3752 through to 2200 is a feat of horological genius. Stemming from 11 years of development, including a year entirely devoted to its assembly, Les Cabinotiers The Berkley Grand Complication is a milestone, another Everest in contemporary watchmaking history. Time and Time Again, Patek Philippe Proves its Pedigree… The Nautilus 5740 Is A Prime Example… Inside this Timepieces paper-thin 3.88mm profile sits the Self-Winding Caliber 240 Q Movement - but don’t let its size fool you. The movement is composed of 275 parts; their faultless performance proves Pateks' engineering prowess. The capabilities of its Perpetual Calendar are almost unfathomable. In addition to automatically taking into account months with 28, 29, 30, and 31 days, it keeps track of the leap year cycle. If the watch is wound daily, the Perpetual Calendar will not require any manual corrections before February 28th 2100 - a secular year that omits February 29th. Its Moon-Phase display is similarly unimaginably officiant - deviating from the true lunar cycle by merely one day every 122 years. The Patek Philippe 5740 is masterful technical sophistication at its pinnacle… Now available in the Boutique and Online… THWD

I remember finding Pascal Brandt's 1998 column "will the real Haute Horlogerie please stand up" while reading the Europa Star archives. It clicked with me because I had the same thought for many years - I even wrote an article about that topic back in 2021! As noted in this sequel column, the term has declined these days with the more saccharine "Luxury" taking its place. But it is still worth considering what these things mean to the producers, the marketers, and the consumers of fine watchmaking. In my own consideration of the topic (which I intentionally re-worded as "Haute Horology"), I declared a test of the pinnacle of watch production: 1) The watch must be a true integration of mechanics and styling 2) The design myst incorporate all elements into a unified whole 3) The watch must be true to itself Although this "test" might seem somewhat arbitrary, it cuts to the bone in my opinion. It's not about price or brand or even craftsmanship; It's about producing something truly special: "Why did the designer bring these elements together? What were they saying about the brand and the wearer? What statement were they personally trying to make? And how does this fit into the history of the model, the brand, and the industry?" This informs my own taste as both a buyer and admirer of watches. And explains my preference for independents and unconventional watchmakers who are able to make really special pieces. I urge you to read Pascal's original column, which is helpfully embedded in his latest one. And please also read my 2021 article, "What is Haute Horology?" https://lnkd.in/e9Kidv3F
The year is 1998, two years before the release of Eminem’s mega hit The Real Slim Shady, which begins with the famous line: “Will the real Slim Shady please stand up?” Somewhat prophetically, Pascal Brandt penned an article in Europa Star entitled “Will the real Haute Horlogerie please stand up?” It was written in the wake of a forum held in Geneva to discuss and define the (already) overused and often misunderstood term of Haute Horlogerie. Three decades later, Pascal is back to review some of his watchmaking features of the time and to relate these writings to the situation today. Discover the first feature!

The Perpetual Calendar, explained. In tribute to the exquisite Manero Peripheral Perpetual Calendar Black, CSO Renato Bonina sits down to explain the Perpetual Calendar, one of CFB’s most incredible complications. Able to display and self-adjust for the year (and the leap year), the date, day, month and the seconds, the timepiece does not require any adjustment until the year 2100. As one of the most exclusive complications, a perpetual calendar renders a watch into a true luxury timepiece -- exampling the highest level of Haute Horlogerie and savoir-faire.
