Last night, the Florida Panthers secured The Stanley Cup, the ultimate trophy in sports. The series was a rollercoaster, starting with the Panthers leading 3-0, only for the Oilers to stage a comeback and force a thrilling game 7 finale. Witnessing the team's victory celebration alongside their loved ones, I gathered 7 valuable leadership lessons: 🏒 Believe in yourself, believe in your team 🏒 Don’t give up when the going gets tough 🏒 A team is more than a group, to gel, you have to drop egos, work together and believe 🏒 Dreams come true, you might visualize a dream as an 8 year old while skating on rollerblades in your driveway, but if you put in the work yourself, collaborate with your teammates, the dream can be shared and realized. 🏒The character of your team represents the tenacity of the “fight”, pick a team that’s more like family so you can get through the ups and downs 🏒Family ties it altogether, care and love like a family, that makes a good team 🏒Teamwork involves leadership, kindness, supporting each other through the entire season(s), to realize dreams together. If you fall short, try again, it can happen. This year I had the chance to help a couple friends and loved ones achieve their wish of going to the hockey hall of fame. An impressive museum of more than the greatest trophy in sports, a place that showcases the history of the sport, the evolution od the sport, and many of the men and women who have been recognized for their hard work and dreams. #leading #learning

Over the weekend, I had a proud dad moment as I watched my son and his team clinch the championship at a basketball tournament. Couldn't be prouder of the little guy. Here are three takeaways I took away from their championship journey: 1️⃣ Exemplary Sportsmanship: Amidst the victories, what stood out was the sportsmanship displayed by my son's coach. Even in blowout wins, she ensured the opposing team didn't feel defeated. It's a powerful lesson that winning with grace is as important as the victory itself. 2️⃣ Dedication and Hard Work Pay Off: My son's improvement wasn't overnight. It was the result of many hours of practice, sweat, and determination and his commitment to honing his skills. Bottom line: hard work, consistently applied, yields success. 3️⃣ The Right Mindset, Win or Lose: Championships are sweet, but the essence lies in the journey. I'm immensely proud of my son for approaching every game with the right mindset—learning from losses, celebrating wins, and recognizing that growth happens in both situations. As a parent, seeing these qualities in my son and his team fills me with immense joy. It's not just about winning a trophy; it's about developing character and skills that extend far beyond the basketball court. Whenever champions are crowned, I listen closely to what they say after because there are important lessons to be learned. Earlier this week, the Celtics won another NBA title and I took a couple of notes from their postgame interviews. “Growth through failure” Two years ago, the Celtics lost in the Finals. Most of the core players from that team finally got their chip this week. They grew by losing two years ago. They didn’t quit. Instead they went back to work to get better. They grew and improved in order to succeed. Which brings me to the next thing that was said that stood out to me. “We had to make hard decisions.” Winning is not easy and along with all the work and growth necessary to become a champion, there are also a lot of tough decisions to be made. Those decisions could be fundamental strategic, personnel and management decisions to preparation, talent development and execution. These are lessons applicable to sports and athletics as well as to business, career, financial and in relationships. On Monday night, one team will be skating Lord Stanley’s Cup and you can bet that I’ll be listening closely to what the winner has to say after. Of the many great conversations we have in our #globalwells class with Janelle Wells, Ph.D., one that I enjoyed the most centered around the Steph and Sabrina shootout. This contest focuser on the two most decorated and skilled shooters, both shooting from the NBA three point line, and both using their respective ball. One of the points we discussed and questioned was the name of the contest, being “Steph and Sabrina”, rather than “NBA vs WNBA”. Though there was opportunity to partner and unite the two major leagues, I think the decision to use their names was best for branding. Both shooters had decorated college careers and started their iconic paths at the collegiate level. Steph and his Davidson team made their Cinderella run in 2008, putting little Davidson College on the map. Additionally, Sabrina and her Oregon Ducks came on the national scene in many ways in 2020, but especially when she reached the NCAA milestone of the first female or male player to reach 2,000 career points, 1,000 career assists, and 1,000 career rebounds. Most importantly, we talked about the system that was built, who it was built by, and those not considered. Why is the NBA three point line the standard? Why is the NBA ball the norm? Why do people compare men’s and women’s basketball when they were never supposed to be the same? Why compare men and women and their abilities, when each were born differently with different natural and genetic strengths? The shoot off was a great event for the game of basketball and even better, it was a great event for culture, gender, and sport ideologies to interweave like they always do. What are some other ways we could cross leagues of men’s and women’s sports and create events of partnership and support? Or, what counterparts of men’s and women’s teams of the same position would be entertaining to see?

5 Lessons I learned watching Caitlin Clark’s journey to 3,528 points #teamdynamics #leadership #caitlinclark #22 #lisabluder 🏀 1. Practice, Practice, Practice Of course, it’s the most obvious lesson. But you don’t hit 85% of free throws, 39% of 3-point shots, and 47% of shots without practice. I read that she shoots 300 shots a day - 100 from the 3 point line, 100 from the free throw line and 100 from the paint. She makes the shots she takes, and it’s thrilling to watch. 👀 2. See the Big Picture Watching Caitlin pass and steal, she has an unbelievable situational awareness. She seems to know where everyone is, and where they’re going to be. She knows when a hole will open, and passes the ball to her teammates with confidence and power. 🤜 🤛 3. Play as a Team Caitlin Clark is a generational talent, and she’s a team player. Every interview, she points to her team and gives them credit. When the Penn State team slowed her down, she found Hannah Steulke under the basket over and over again. That night Steulke set the arena record with 47 points and Clark had 15 assists. 📣 4. Choose your Leader Clark has said that she chose the University of Iowa for two reasons. The first is Coach Lisa Bluder: “She lets me be me.” Bruder trusts her to make the right decision, to take the 3-point shots when she’s confident she can make them. And Clark trusts Bruder to develop a team where she can lead and grow. ❤️ 5. Do What You Love The 2nd reason she became a Hawkeye? Those fans. I grew up in Iowa City and the fans show up, they bring the noise, they care. She works the crowd and they love her. It’s a perfect example of a give and get relationship. These lessons are pretty obvious, right? We all know them. They’re platitudes. But watching Caitlin Clark bring them to life is so thrilling and inspiring. It makes me want to wake up tomorrow morning and bring a better self to MY team! And kudos to the marketing geniuses at Nike who came up with “You break it, you own it.” Oh yes, and show your support for the University of Iowa. Sport is a huge part of my life. I've been playing basketball since I was 14. Playing on many different teams from...school, club, university, masters (that's basketball for old people, basically), summer leagues - you name it, I've played it. As well as the enjoyment of playing a team sport, one of the biggest things it has taught me is how to work with other people and play to their strengths: ✅ Collaboration - We all have our own strengths and weaknesses. Together, we make great teams. ✅ Embrace mistakes - Some of our best learning comes from mistakes. Don't punish people for making them. ✅ Encourage difference - Celebrate it, work with it, don’t squash it. Use our differences to understand people better. ✅ Leadership - I’ve captained quite a few teams in my years playing basketball. Keeping teammates going when they’re heads go down, is vital, as is demonstrating commitment and encouragement. As a leader, you've got to be prepared to get stuck in and lead from the front. ✅ Bravery - You have to take risks. Take that shot, gamble on a block or an interception. There’s no room for perfection - just effort. When I'm not at home with my daughters, you'll find me on court with these ladies.
