Coaching or therapy? Both? Maybe you relate to this: people report being overwhelmed and stressed and are reporting increases in mental health challenges and burnout. People are asking for mental health support, and for many, that support often equates to therapy. The challenge for therapy as a solution is that it doesn't reach everyone who needs it. This article speaks to coaching as the solution... Coaching is cited as being suitable for those who require mental health support but not clinical-level care. Trained coaches in mental health and wellness may be able to fill in some of the therapy gaps. For example, as outlined: "In a peer-reviewed study just accepted for publication at the Journal of Technology in Behavioral Science, 58 percent of people who started care with symptoms of depression experienced clinical recovery after at least one session with a certified coach and saw a 76 percent increase in their well-being overall. These findings build upon our previous published research showing the more sessions people participated in, the more their well-being improved." Many of the same principles of effective therapy apply to coaching. There needs to be a fit between the coach and the client, and the coach needs education and training in coaching and specific training in modalities proven effective for treating milder mental health conditions. Personally, my coaching is in the business space. BUT - it is very hard to separate your business from your mental wellness. It is VERY DIFFICULT to run a business if you are not feeling secure in how you are mentally and emotionally doing. The bottom line is that self-awareness requires you to ask yourself hard questions about how you are doing, feeling, and showing up at home, work, and in your relationships. The good news? We are in the midst of a recognised mental health epidemic in the UK and it’s terrifying. More and more employees are taking time off sick due to stress & anxiety than ever before. I know this because I’ve spent the last 12 years working in HR & People Management and I’ve always kept up to date with the latest information & stats surrounding mental health in the UK as well as speaking with people every day. I know organisations are trying to tackle the issue in house by introducing mental health awareness and resilience training to help colleagues recognise the signs of stress, depression, burnout and providing clear signposting and EAP programmes. Whilst I strongly believe that any mental health awareness training is better than none at all, I have always felt like training that is just signposting and not providing a solution is counter productive. That is why I left my career in HR and created a business where along side my career coaching, I could support companies by offering training that is proactive in reducing stress within the workplace by providing colleagues with a scientifically backed tool they can keep in their toolbox and use every single day at work and at home. When a colleague finds themselves at work feeling stressed and overwhelmed, they don’t need to know there is a number they can call. They need a tool they can use there and then that sends calming signals to their brain, change the physiology of their body by taking them out of fight or flight and allow them to manage the situation in a calmer way. Are you a psychologist? No, I am a life coach. Whenever I talk to a client the common question, they ask is how different are you from a psychologist? I felt there is a gap in understanding both. You read that right. I still go to therapy. I need it. I will probably need it for life. Yesterday, was my quarterly check-in with my psychiatrist. We discussed some of the anxiety I have been experiencing as of late. That is something my doctor is tremendously helpful with. I also belong to two different coaching programs. One is to make me a better entrepreneur and the other helps me with my health and wellness. Understanding the type of support you need is crucial. Both therapists and life coaches can help you improve your life, but they do so in different ways. Here’s a quick guide to help you decide which is right for you: Therapist 1. Qualifications: Licensed mental health professionals with advanced degrees and extensive training. 2. Scope: Address mental health issues, diagnose, and treat psychological disorders. 3. Approach: Explore past experiences and use evidence-based treatments like Cognitive Behavior Therapy. 4. Regulation: Regulated by state boards, adhering to strict ethical guidelines and confidentiality rules. Life Coach 1. Qualifications: Various levels of education and training. (I have a Professional Life Coach certification from Certified Life Coach Institute. I also have 20 years of experience as a life coach before receiving my certification. 2. Scope: Focus on personal development, goal-setting, and achieving objectives. 3. Approach: Future-oriented and action-based, helping clients with goals and accountability. 4. Regulation: Varied standards and practices. When to Choose Each (or as you can see from me... when to chose both!) - Therapist: For mental health issues, emotional difficulties, and clinical diagnosis. - Life Coach: For achieving specific goals, improving relationships, and enhancing overall life satisfaction.
