Happy Independence Day!
I’m proud to be part of Oak Ridge National Laboratory - an institution born of national need that continues to serve and be at the ready when America calls.
Are you ready for another trivia day?
Let's test our basic science skills. What is the third planet from the sun called?

Core values are incredibly important for our success and to have the right calibration for the future. It helps us staying on course, doing the right thing, and have impact well beyond our individual reach and capacity.

Chevy Humphrey, president and chief executive officer of the Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago, keynotes “Celebrating Five Years of Core Values” at today's Director’s Special Colloquium. Watch live here: https://lnkd.in/dpeKBcQt
Humprey joins Argonne laboratory director Paul K. Kearns in conversation on how Argonne and MSI can further work together to deliver pivotal discoveries to the public, make the science community more welcoming through the lab's Core Values, and encourage the next generation of researchers and engineers.

Our next speaker highlight is the amazing Elizabeth Bonker. We are so thrilled to have her present: "FIGHT-OR-FLIGHT NO MORE: USING HRV TO GET NONSPEAKERS ON THE RIGHT VAGAL BRANCH" at our Spring 2024 CME Conference.
This presentation will be a first-person case study of how natural interventions were used guided by a scientist over a two-year period to move Heart Rate Variability (HRV) data into a "normal" range giving the nonspeaking participant relief from living in fight-or-flight mode. HRV recordings taken before and after interventions helped determine which were most effective at different points in the treatment cycle.

"Embark on a visual odyssey through the realm of optimization and decision-making in my latest poster unveiling the enigmatic realm of saddle points in operations research. Witness the convergence of peaks and valleys, where optimal solutions meet, offering a deeper understanding of complex systems. Explore the intricate landscapes of mathematical optimization and discover the pivotal role of saddle points in steering towards efficient decisions. Join me on this illuminating journey at the forefront of operations research, as we uncover the nuanced interplay between constraints and solutions within the captivating world of saddle points."
So true - and the fact we still see this mentality in "civilized nations" clearly shows there is a long way to go in order to classify ourselves as civilized. A failure to accept that science advances would still have us living in the dark ages - though given certain political figures across the globe, it sometimes feels that we have regressed.
Of course, there should be other options - if you decide to become an anti- vaccination supporter, that should be reflected in your medical notes; that way, when you arrive in hospital ill and riddled with the disease that everyone trying to cure, doctors can make sure they don't give you the vaccine that you are protesting about. Instead you can have the existing medical treatment you still cling to, accepting its failure rates.
This will then allow the vaccines to go to those who need it; those who have supported it's development, and worked with medical professionals to improve the quality of healthcare for all.
Having worked closely with those on the front line and seen the impact of several viruses and diseases, I have no time for individuals who cry "ant-vaccine", yet are the first in line demanding it when they are ill with the very disease they protest against. I think, in future, if your belief is that real, then it is recorded on your medical records and you are treated accordingly in hospitals. That way everyone wins; anti-vaxxers don't get the substance put into their bodies; hospitals get to treat those who need it properly; and hopefully society becomes more aware of the true threat of those "heretics" who seek to keep us in the dark ages and fear advancement, yet are the first to demand the vaccine when they fall ill themselves.
Dustin Miller - PolyInnovator broaches an interesting question here and I wish he had looked a little bit into personality proclivities. On the Meyer's Briggs, you find the traits of Sensing (Discrete) and iNtuitive (Broad) that set a foundation for thinking.
This isn't to say that Sensing types can't be polymathic, far from it, it also doesn't mean that the intuitive will naturally become so either. Both need to be balanced but I will say, the iNtuitive types have the natural inclination to look broadly, specifically when paired with a STEM education.
Still though, Polymathy is a mindset which can become a skillset, and help develop your personality proclivities even more. I do a slightly deeper dive into how everyone can develop a polymathic mindset here:
