As professionals, I am sure you all receive countless calls and emails from recruiters. It's natural to feel flattered by the attention, but it's also important to know your rights. Recently, I have been contacted by multiple recruiters who have asked for my DOB (Date of Birth) without specifying the purpose behind asking such a legally sensitive question. They seem genuinely confused when I refuse to give it to them. In the United States (and outside of some states who have even stricter rules), this is only legal to ask when the information is needed for running a background check or for proof of meeting a legal age requirement. A good interviewer will almost always preface their request with such a reason. This is done because it is very illegal to use that information in a hiring decision. It's important to know which questions are allowed, which are not, and which are only allowed in certain circumstances.

📞 I recently had a call with one of my clients to see how their new hire is doing, and something surprised me... After chatting, he said "I've never had a recruiter actually follow up with me. Typically recruiters just disappear and I never hear back from them after making a hire, I'm curious why do you check in? " My reason is simple... I presented you with the candidate and you trusted me when you hired them. If I don't check-in and the candidate doesn't live up to expectations... odds are you'll probably use another recruiter in the future. So I want to make sure you stay happy with every hire. However, even a partial review or a random sampling of applications could make a significant difference.
