The ERS-2, a 5.057 pound pioneer European Space Agency satellite is expected to reenter and largely burn up in Earth’s atmosphere today. The agency decided to end the satellite’s operations after 16 years of collecting valuable scientific data and deorbit it in 2011, rather than adding to the space junk orbiting the planet. The satellite executed 66 deorbiting maneuvers in 2011 which burned through satellite’s fuel and decreased its altitude, setting ERS-2’s orbit on a trajectory to slowly spiral closer to Earth and reenter the atmosphere within 15 years. There is a always small risk of some fragments could reach the planet’s surface from these most likely will fall into the ocean. The exact reentry time is unclear and dependent on the solar activity. We are nearing the solar maximum cycle which happens approximately every 11 years and its effects on the space debris can be significant. The increased solar activity can change the density of Earth’s atmosphere and the gravitational force of the atmosphere on the satellite.

Yet another example of rising intensity and frequency of wildfires: the Smokecreek House Fire in Texas burned more than 1 million acres last week, late February, becoming the largest wildfire in Texas history. Such events clearly underscore the necessity of inexpensive high-resolution wildfire monitoring tools to support emergency response management, which are currently lacking. Utilizing the power of artificial intelligence with currently available satellite remote sensing, we have successfully developed a pilot AI tool to improve the spatial resolution of GOES imagery to generate real-time high-resolution active fire mapping. Grateful to be a part of such great team and this crucial effort, I am eager and ecited to build upon this success in near future. This uncontrolled reentry highlighted the ongoing challenge of space debris management 🌌. Despite concerns, the impact occurred in a remote area, minimizing risks to human safety 👨🚀. The incident underscores the need for international cooperation 🌍 and innovative strategies to address the growing issue of space debris and ensure the sustainability of space activities 🚀.
