Notable not for novel insights, but as another conference of cliche in healthcare, where the voice of industry (i.e., pharmaceutical and medical device) is missing from a Big Event that restates what everyone already knows: It’s hard to change the operating philosophy of a $4 trillion market. “Things take longer to happen than you think they will, and then they happen faster than you thought they could,” Don Calcagno, chief population health officer at Advocate Health, said in his presentation, quoting an economist. “He is spot on.” Indeed. As it turns out, the first value-based care payment model was developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics....in 1967. Named 'The Patient Centered Medical Home', it was created for sick children who were seeing disconnected specialists and required care coordination. [Fragmentation as a problem before the first email was ever sent, in 1971, and the first website created, in 1991]. Nearly 60 years later, we get a reaffirmation of the obvious, journalism covering the ornamental wave by the same speakers on the same circuit, describing another "unmet need" in healthcare, this time to center things on prevention. Have it moderated by an entity that understands cross-sector solutions, something like Stanford Social Innovation Review or The Club of Rome. Until then, I don't see the point of spending two days in a hotel ballroom in Philadelphia that could be a 20-minute vanilla video call 🤘 #LeapFrog @ Blue Spoon Consulting
