The fashion industry has long followed a wasteful "take-make-waste" approach, and even iconic items like jeans have contributed to resource depletion. To combat this, a circular economy for fashion is essential, where products are designed to be used more, made to be remade, and created from safe, recycled, or renewable materials. The Jeans Redesign initiative exemplifies this concept by demonstrating how jeans can be designed for a circular economy. Developed with input from 80 experts, these guidelines encourage brands, mills, and manufacturers to transform jean design. Since its launch, over 100 organizations from 25+ countries have embraced these principles, moving beyond theory and making concrete changes. We at Customized Clothing are aiming to adopt the circular economy principles. ☑ Reduce Waste: When businesses design products with durability, repairability, and recyclability in mind, they can minimize the use of virgin resources and maximize the value derived from materials. This shift towards a product lifecycle-based mindset allows for a more sustainable production model which not only benefits the environment but also enhances brand reputation and consumer loyalty. ☑ Resale/Repair: Take-back programs for used garments and textiles have gained significant momentum in recent years. These initiatives enable customers to return their worn-out clothing, which is then repurposed or recycled into new products. ☑ Disposal-first Approach: Designing products with end-of-life considerations in mind is a crucial aspect of the circular economy. Businesses employing modular design or incorporating easily separable components can facilitate the recycling and repurposing of products at the end of their lifecycle.

💵 How much extra would you be willing to pay for a pair of jeans made from recycled fabrics? ♻️ The bankruptcy of Renewcell highlights the slow transition to circularity within fast fashion. "It shows a lack of leadership and willingness to change in the fashion industry," says Michael Berg, chairman of Renewcell and continues: "Everyone thinks this is brilliant and excellent. Everyone talks about sustainability. But when it comes to implementing it, there isn't much action." 💚 It's time to rethink our choices and invest in a wardrobe that not only defines style but also champions sustainability. 👖 #sustainability #circularity #fashion

❓ Do you have a pair of jeans in your wardrobe? 👖 That's very likely because jeans have been at the heart of fashion collections for decades. According to Statista, the global market for jeans was estimated to be around 2.9 billion pieces in 2021. The way jeans are made typically requires large amounts of resources, and the way they are designed makes them difficult to recycle after use. Jeans are one example of the fashion industry’s take-make-waste linear approach, and therefore, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation asked this important questions: Can we design and make jeans to be fit for a circular economy today? 🤔 And what can we do together to make circular economy for fashion the norm? ♻ They started a jeans redesign project and put the circular design of jeans centre stage. Our textile expert Carl Warkentin comments: "Jeans are a staple in most wardrobes, but our current approach to making and disposing of them is unsustainable. The Ellen MacArthur Foundation's jeans redesign project is an important step towards a circular economy for fashion, where jeans are designed and made to be reused and recycled. By embracing circular design principles, we can reduce our environmental impact and create a more sustainable clothing industry for the future." 💡 Watch this short inspiring film produced by BBC and learn more. 📽 https://lnkd.in/e7dQ5uV2 You are an active player in the textile industry, would like to make a change yourself, but don't really know how yet? Rachel Arthur has just launched a Substack titled, “How to ‘own it’ in sustainable fashion.” While “sustainability” as a lived concept is not inherently new, the industry of sustainability in fashion is still in its infancy. Rachel compares working in #sustainablefashion to moving to New York City as an expat — on the surface, it might feel like your experience as a newcomer is uniquely overwhelming, but the reality is that most inhabitants at any given time are also newcomers, trying to find their footing. Similarly, the majority of individuals working in sustainable fashion have arrived from somewhere else — marketing, science, creative arts, and so on. Rachel writes, “I'm fascinated by those journeys - that version of 'how did you get here' and 'why did you come', and how indeed you are owning the nuance (so much nuance!) of the role you're now in… We are a mixed bag and a varied bunch, with a million different experiences to learn from and to offer up in this rapidly evolving landscape. And THAT is what makes the potential of the systems change we need for sustainability to become a reality, feel possible. We are forging new ground every day, and for that, we need to lean in hard to the role that all of us can individually, and thus collectively, play.” It can be so easy to feel overwhelmed by feelings of imposter syndrome in any industry, but I feel it’s particularly prevalent when it comes to sustainability in fashion. Are we fashion experts? Communicators? Activists? Policymakers? Take me for example. Over the past decade or so I’ve held extremely varied positions, both tied to fashion and not. I’ve been a retail clerk, a copywriter, a wholesale brand rep, a content creator, a digital marketing strategist, and a smoothie maker. I’ve spent the last couple years studying Global Communications at The American University of Paris. Currently, I’m interning with an international science organization. I might have a lot of experience across the board, but it feels like I’m a master of nothing. What I believe Rachel is getting at here is that it’s ok if you don’t feel like a “master” of sustainable fashion — this ever-evolving field is inherently multidisciplinary and, as such, the best thing you can do if you want to make an impact in it is lean into your passion, embrace what you’re good at, and just own it. I may not be a scientist, but I understand how to communicate concepts to different audiences. I have never worked in fashion design, but I understand the importance of designing new and better fashion systems that exist to serve people and planet over profits. I don’t pretend to have all of the answers, but I recognize the infinite possibilities that come from co-learning and collaboration. I’ll end this long and rambling post with a final call to action from Rachel Arthur on forging your path in the sustainable fashion industry: “Do it now and don’t look back. We need everyone and every skillset.”
