#namibia #political Namibia's First Presidential Debate a Win for Democracy Public debates between presidential candidates are often regarded as a benchmark of competitive and open elections. However, such debates have not yet become entrenched in Namibia. Nonetheless, it seems a new era is about to dawn ahead of this year's presidential and National Assembly elections. Namibia's first presidential debate ahead of the 2024 elections is set to take place next week. https://lnkd.in/dPyFy_YR

Rwanda's presidential elections? Paul Kagame was first elected president by Parliament in 2000. From 2003, 2010, and 2017, he was re-elected by universal suffrage with over 90% of the votes in his favor. What will be the political and security implications for the Great Lakes Region, and most importantly, for the DRC considering the strained diplomatic relationship that the two neighbouring states have shared for more than a should Pr Kagame be re-elected for another 5-year term in the upcoming presidential elections?

If opinion polls ahead of South Africa's monumental forthcoming general elections next month are to be believed, then its liberation party the African National Congress is likely to dip below 50% of the popular vote for the first time since 1994. A post-election coalition is highly anticipated with the ANC expected to act as a main broker with at least one opposition party. Regardless of the outcome of the general election, South Africa's political and economic challenges are likely to become more acute and convoluted. Coalition Governments are always a challenge and the ANC, which has entrenched itself throughout the government for 30 years, cannot be expected to relinquish control easily. #exigentrisk #africanpolitics #southafrica #elections #politics #coalition https://lnkd.in/dBuPdpdb

Perhaps until recently Americans could claim to live in one of the most democratic regions of the world. As citizens of the European Union we now appear to have the greater claim to that lead position in the democracy stakes! A betting person, in anticipation of the upcoming European Parliament elections in June and the US Presidential elections in November, would probably put their money on the EU remaining a bastion of liberal democracy. On the other hand, the jury is out on how democracy and the rule of law will fare in the US after November. We shouldnt however be complacent about the potential for the European Union to shift sharply to the right. National elections across some EU Member States have surprised even the most seasoned political observers - in the Netherlands, Italy, Finland, Sweden and , much less so, in Hungary. The EU & the US are important pillars of the United Nations and of the values and rules- based multilateral system which the UN represents internationally. If the US Presidential elections in November deliver the result that most democrats fear, then the future international role of the European Union will be more important yet , If the European Parliament elections in June strengthen the hand of the political right, (and particularly the far- right), the likelihood that Europe in the future will be fit or ready to step into the leadership vacuum created by the US will greatly diminish. Other posts on this page have highlighted the tendency of the political right/far right to promote climate scepticism and to favour retreating from engaged and enlightened multilateralism which works in the interests of countries everywhere. So the message today is that every one of us- in whatever roles we occupy as politicians, educators, business leaders, civil society activists , authors, broadcasters etc - should use the coming weeks, in advance of the European Parliament elections in early June, to encourage everyone we know and can influence to vote for candidates who will (I) support an active and engaged Europe in the world, (ii) ensure that the EU “leads by example” in all key policy fields impacting on the rest of the world ( nb climate) and ((iii) continue to uphold and strengthen observance of the UN Charter & the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and (iv) support the progressive reform of the structures of global governance to ensure that humanity is ready and able to meet the challenges of the future. Don’t forget to vote for EP election candidates wherever you live in the European Union between Thursday 6 th and Sunday 9 th June and ensure that a progressive and outward-looking European Parliament is returned after those elections!!
We should never take democracy for granted. #UseYourVote in the European elections, 6-9 June 2024 → elections.europa.eu
Use your vote. Or others will decide for you.
