It was a dream come true to get the opportunity to put that belief to the test when I joined Relay earlier this year. I work as an external executive and team coach for quite a few companies and can see the positive impact coaching has on the organization. I would have engaged and hired external coaches more frequently when I was an HR Executive if I knew then what I know now. I often wore both an internal coach and an HR hat and frankly, it’s not the most effective strategy. CEO’s should champion the use of coaches and the creation of a coaching culture as part of their people strategy. Expecting HR to be an executive coach to the same leaders that they also provide HR support to can be challenging. Many leaders won’t open up to the same extent with an internal coach as they would with an external one. From my experience, having separation of these roles is ideal. Thoughts?
