We know first-hand what is most important and needed for students who look like us: in our classrooms, our policies, and in our communities. At EdLoC, we're tackling the critical challenges within our education system that perpetuate generational poverty and hinder the progress of Black and Latinx teachers. Teachers of color shoulder the vital responsibility of shaping young minds yet face systemic barriers that threaten their financial stability and professional longevity. Under the weight of escalating educational debts and disproportionately low salaries, affording the cost of living no longer feels viable for underpaid teachers of color. This has led to a scarcity of diverse educators that not only affects the quality of education but deprives students of color of role models who reflect their own experiences and potential. We stand with educators like 2023 Boulder Fund recipient and CEO of the Watts of Power Foundation, Dr. Peter Watts, Jr., who is at the forefront of providing better support systems for teachers. On Thursday, February 8th, I participated in the Building the Future of Middle-Income Housing Policy in California convening with SPUR. An oft-neglected demographic of the housing crisis in California, middle-income communities are failed by a lack of “entry-level” homes, per Berkeley’s Terner Center for Housing Innovation, and are priced out of this great state due in part to the consistent failure of housing development to keep up with housing necessity. Californians who are middle-income deserve the same access to stable, affordable housing as all Californians, and the fight to create an equitably housed California must champion the voice of this population that is consistently left out of the affordable housing conversations. I was glad to lend my policy knowledge and experience as President and CEO of the California Community Reinvestment Corporation to this conversation, and I hope to hear more about the future of affordable housing development supported by an affordable housing finance system that serves a broader range of incomes going forward. #middleincome #affordablehousing 

The impending solar eclipse has presented a significant decision-making challenge for Texas schools, with districts caught between the logistical hurdles of remaining open and the unique learning opportunities the event offers. As swaths of Texas, including major cities like Austin and Dallas, find themselves in the path of totality for the first time in decades, some school districts have opted to cancel classes to allow students and staff to experience the rare astronomical event. This decision comes in light of expectations for increased visitor numbers and potential traffic congestion, as well as concerns over safety and the logistical capacity to handle such an extraordinary day. Seguin and Como-Pickton Independent School Districts, for example, have chosen closure, citing a lack of substitute teachers and potential delays in emergency response times. Conversely, districts like Round Rock ISD are braving potential challenges, arguing the educational value and the need to provide childcare outweigh the logistical issues. The eclipse is not just a day off for some but an educational pivot; with districts and educators integrating eclipse-related curricula and activities in the lead-up to the event, emphasizing STEM engagement and aspiration. The community involvement extends beyond the classroom, with donations of solar eclipse glasses and the organization of special events aimed at maximizing the learning experience. Florida's Board of Education has approved the use of educational videos in classrooms that were created by PragerU, a conservative media group. Despite the name PragerU is not a university. These videos are animated shorts designed specifically to indoctrinate children with conservative perspectives, according to Dennis Prager, a founder of PragerU. The videos claim that slavery was no big deal because it was practiced all over the world at the time. They also credited the US with being the first to stop slavery, while ignoring that several other countries had banned the practice prior to the US. The videos also compare the fight against climate activist to Poland's fight against the Nazis. The scary part of this is that the FL Board of Education has announced these videos "align to Florida's revised civics and government standards." Setting aside the problem of skewed facts, the state of Florida has approved videos where Nazis are defined as any group not agreeing with conservatives. This type of argument only encourages emotionally charged responses which can often lead to violence instead of encouraging honest conversations about the topic. https://lnkd.in/ey5A7c7d
