The 7 Lessons learned on the spinout journey from the CEO of an early-stage tech company.
adsilico Limited is a portfolio company of Northern Gritstone and Parkwalk Advisors, spun out of the University of Leeds, developing in-silico solutions using generative AI.
CEO Sheena Macpherson shared her journey to an audience of academic researchers at the university today.
👉🏾 Here are her lessons learned from the spinout process:
🏑Surround yourself with a strong team and value that talent.
📃 Ensure a shared understanding of your business – what you’re doing, why you’re doing it. Right down to the terminology you’re using.
✅ Validate your market assumptions – list them, test them, and keep testing.
🎤 Adapt your message to fit your audience – distill the message down to resonate with your non-tech audience.
❔ Ask for feedback – even where you got a ‘no’ make sure you know why and use that feedback to improve.
🛠 Use existing resources – don’t be afraid to actively seek what you need so that you can deliver. Ask for help and learn from others.
🏋🏾♀️ Build resilience – have a good support network - extended team members and mentors (those further ahead of you on the journey).
Sheena was joined by Mattia Scalabrin (PhD) of the University of Leeds commercialisation team and Northern Gritstone Investment Director Andy Naylor, in the collaborative hub Nexus Leeds.
👋🏾 Here at Northern Gritstone, we are there for the journey with our portfolio companies, supporting their amazing science, technology and people, to create the North of England's world-class companies of tomorrow such as adsilico Limited.
