Yesterday, a Start-up Founder reached out to me with a burning question:  I've got this term sheet, how can I use it to get more offers? This made me wonder that even more founders might have the same doubt. So, here you go - When you get an offer, it's like a validation just as important as blue tick on twitter before commercialization: p It validates your concept, valuation and team capability in the eyes of Investors that someone is trusting you with your money and that someone matters the most here to create the FOMO. The bigger the reputation of someone the bigger FOMO you’ll be able to pull off. So when you get a term sheet don't say yes right away. Instead, first prepare a list of terms that should be best for your vision and let others Investors know, in a quiet way, that you're thinking about an offer. This can make more companies interested in you and you’ll see the Turnaround time of communications getting shorter and shorter. But Make sure to maintain a balance in your communications with the one who offered.  Express interest in the current offer while subtly indicating openness to others. If used this process right you’ll get a deal which is not just better in funding terms but also in strategic partnership. Exclusive: The stars are aligning for Dick Costolo, the one-time chief executive of Twitter. His venture capital firm 01 Advisors, which he founded alongside Adam Bain, Twitter's former president and chief operating officer, recently closed on $395 million in capital commitments for a third fund. Flush with cash, the partners are seeing a flood of hyper-growth startups come to market for funding after a two-year dry spell. "We were on Zooms with each other and with founders and CEOs through the holidays," Costolo told Business Insider. "You try to be picky and patient and only do the deals where you think like, wow, everything is lined up beautifully here, but we're super, super busy right now and looking at tons of stuff." 🔥 Hot take: just take the meeting with a VC Associate I've been seeing crazy talk on Twitter about whether startup founders should talk to Associates in VC firms. If you do not have a prior relationship with a Partner or any potential warm intros into a Partner, your best shot is to talk to an Associate. (FYI Associate is an entry level position, Partner is a senior position) VC firms have Associates for a reason, to source deals. Many deals that get reviewed in Investment Committee meetings to decide on who to fund start off as deals initially championed by an Associate. And many of the best VC Partners today started off their careers as Associates, rising in the ranks of VC because of their ability to source and lead deals. Even if you do manage to pitch a Partner, there is zero guarantee they follow through, submit to the Investment Committee, and push the deal through. Startup fundraising is a long game. And often the best play is to work lower down the food chain, build relationships, learn how the firm works, get advice, earn trust, tweak your startup & pitch, and position your startup as a high-quality, backable deal. And a good Associate will have the patience, curiosity, passion, bandwidth, and incentive to help a founder along this journey. Taking the transactional approach of only speaking to Partners means you will 1) miss out on potentially great VC partners, and 2) reduce your chances of a successful raise. If there is FOMO for your deal, you secured your lead, and you are closing your round, take the transactional approach. In all other cases, play the long game, build your VC network, and increase your odds of securing a deal with the right VC partners. 𝐀𝐥𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐚 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐝 𝐈𝐏𝐎𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐨 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐥𝐲 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐝.    259 US unicorns became public through IPOs since 2001. 186, or 72% of them, are still public to this day.    The other 73, or almost a third, are no longer publicly traded. Most of them (68 companies) were acquired, merged, or went private.     For example, LinkedIn became public in 2011 and was then acquired by Microsoft in 2016. Twitter held its IPO in 2013 and was acquired by Elon Musk in 2022.   Five companies (2% of the total) went bankrupt or shut down. Rubius Therapeutics is a recent example. The company shut down in early 2023, 5 years after its triumphant market debut.    I will have more to say on unicorn success or failure stories following IPOs in upcoming posts. My Early Startup Journey: Myth VS the Real World 🚀 When I started ManageMate, I had unrealistic expectations about the startup world. Influenced by movies, PR publications, and Twitter, I believed that once the perfect idea "hit" the target, we'd skyrocket to success effortlessly. However, I soon faced a harsh truth. Building a startup is hard work—tough, consistent, and robust. As a founder, I had to make countless attempts and embrace the fact that many would fall short. It is a journey of facing "NOs," making mistakes, and experiencing local failures. But I was persistent enough to get some wins. The path to success isn't always clear, but achieving those small victories reassured me that I was on the right track, even if not everything was perfect. By the way. The YC YouTube videos and stories from other founders about their early days provided invaluable moral support. They shattered the illusion that startup success is purely magical and that only a select few receive emails from Hogwarts. Instead, I realized it's a journey of challenges and rewards. And that's perfectly okay. So, I found the motivation to keep pushing forward, knowing that it's a real and achievable path, one step at a time. #startups #motivation
