#HRCommunity - We're only 17 days away from the 2024 SHRM Annual Conference and Expo in Chicago! Take advantage of your evening time to do some sightseeing, try out the famous Chicago-style pizza (so freakin' yummy) and/or all of the other Chicago-style culinary experiences. (Tip: DO NOT put ketchup on a Chicago Dog. Just don't.) 5) Acquaintances turned life-long friends - One of my most favorite aspects of the annual conference is getting to see people that sometimes I don't get to see but once a year. Trying to consolidate an event like #SHRM24 into one cohesive post is quite difficult. I have been working at events like SHRM Annual Conference & Expo for over 20 years, but nothing compares to the sheer magnitude of it, and not just because there were 26,000 attendees or because Kelly Clarkson put on another show-stopping performance. The collective mindset of #betterworkplaces is what left the greatest impression on me. From the Expo Hall where some of the greatest conversations took place among attendees, sponsors, and our incredible exhibitors to the employee lounge where colleagues discussed the day’s takeaways to the hotel shuttle where I met some truly incredible thought leaders and speakers humbly sharing their life’s work and passions. Even though it was a conference, it was unlike anything I had attended in the past. There are too many moments that impacted me to report here, but I will start by thanking all the SHRM members and attendees for taking time away from your work and families to invest in yourselves and your employees. There is no greater gift a manager has ever given me than time away from the office to self-develop. Thank you to our SHRM team and countless volunteers, without whom this event would not be possible. I will never know the hours, months, and years it takes to put on something like that. Thank you to my leaders, George and Leslie, for investing in your team and thank you to the many new friends I made (please comment below so we can stay in touch)! If there was one thing that kept resonating with me throughout, it was the tone that was set by an executive in a panel on Sunday in the Executive Network track. Simply but profoundly put (paraphrasing), “Be a culture steward and have courage. Model the behavior you expect within your organizations,” Brian Dickens. Also, shameless plug, but way to GO VOLS!!!🍊⚾️ Jason Isbell, one of the greatest song writers of all time sings, “It gets easier, but it never gets easy.” Let’s be the change, HR professionals. With #SHRM24 conference concluded last Wednesday, I reflected on my learning experience during the conference. As much as the informative sessions by many presenters, I found the conversations with my fella conference participants were the most impactful. As a #HRD researcher who is interested in workplace learning and workforce development from the DE&I lens, I also found reflection plays a significant role after such intensive learning opportunity. Regardless the learning was formal or informal, letting the knowledge settled helps me focus on my development. Besides self-reflecting, reflecting with people who I trust and know helps me narrow down my short-term goals. This made me wonder- 1. How many people whom you trust in the workplace that you feel comfortable being open and share your workplace learning reflection?  2.
