💧As we move forward with Water Professionals Week, today we would like to highlight David Pena, Field Service Representative II. They say that everyone loves a good mystery, but a more accurate turn of phrase would be that everyone loves a good solution. Just ask David, who has worked at MSWD for the past 18.5 years. As part of his regular duties, David works with his team on a number of customer-related services that take place in the field, including meter charge-outs and inspections, backflow inspections, and new customer connections and shutoffs. However, one of his job's more interesting and rewarding parts involves high-use investigations. Using data from our new advanced metering system, David can spot high-use patterns and alert customers of potential leaks or problems before they become a large issue. One of the biggest things he says he does is look for patterns. "A continuous flow typically means there's a leak someplace," said David. "Most of the time, it's an irrigation problem, leaky toilet or pool that's the culprit." According to David, customers often don't know they have an issue until they receive his call or door hanger. "You can't always see a pool of water to know you have a leak. We live in a desert, and the ground can quickly absorb a leak." David says that small leaks add up, especially when running around the clock, and sometimes they can double or even triple a customer's bill. Catching and avoiding problems like this is one of the most rewarding parts of David's job. "I always put myself in the customer's shoes while looking for clues. Most of the time, customers are grateful for the help." A self-described people person, David says customer service is an essential element for any successful business. "My goal is always to find a resolution or good outcome. If I can't find the problem, I like to point the customer in the right direction and let them know we are here for them no matter what they need." #CAWaterWeek #MSWDCares

ChlorTainer Provides Safety for Generations in Huntington Beach, State of California Huntington Beach is a large coastal city in Southern California, with 10 miles of scenic coastline, and a population of nearly 200,000. Hosting both a substantial business and residential presence, safety among water utility operation centers is essential. Huntington Beach oversees the treatment of its own water, which includes the management of chlorine gas used for its water treatment systems. Since the early 2000s, the city looked to implement a superior safety system with passive mitigation and elected to use ChlorTainer’s Ton Secondary Containment Vessel and 150 ChlorTainer Vessel. In a testimonial interview, Huntington Beach's Lead of Water Operations spoke highly of ChlorTainer, mentioning its superior function compared to a scrubber system, “It’s definitely a good way to go for containing chlorine gas,” He said, “I would think it’s probably better than a scrubber. If a scrubber goes off, you’re kind of limited.” The City of Huntington Beach currently plans to hire more operating staff, enabling them to service the containment vessels directly. The importance of this simple but effective product, as operators know, ensures not only their own safety but the safety of their community. A ChlorTainer vessel’s expected lifespan is no less than 100 years (provided proper maintenance, allowing ChlorTainer the opportunity to serve the upcoming generation of operators, by providing safety throughout their careers. This industry isn't for everyone, and the demand for skilled operators is high. If you post a job requiring multiple licenses and I can make more money with a single one of those licenses, you probably should reevaluate that job description. This is specifically for the jobs that want dual water/wastewater licenses and CDLs, etc. #wastewatertreatment #wastewatertreatmentsolutions #wastewatertreatmentplant #operationsandmaintenance #waterindustry #water #sustainability #work

Last week, I mentioned the importance of commercial laundries, particularly in relation to how little the average consumer might think about them. In another field, #wastewatertreatment and #stormwatermanagement are also vital parts of our lives (and if we're being honest, like a referee in sports, we usually only notice them when something goes wrong). Like fresh towels in your hotel room from the commercial laundries example, stormwater management and wastewater treatment don't just happen magically. They require many talented, dedicated people working together, leveraging data and science, and studying the impacts of their efforts over time to tweak their approach as needed. In the article below, Dober's Angela Espy reviewed some research, utilizing data from the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago, that analyzed water management practices on water quality in several bodies of water in the Chicago area. Learn about that and more, including some helpful tips on how to improve wastewater/stormwater management techniques:
#Wastewater and #stormwater management are critical functions in our lives. While it can seem like a monumental task to treat such volumes of water, it is possible (and seasoned #watertreatment professionals can make it look easy). Not only is it possible: it works. Dober Laboratory Technician Angela Espy reviewed long-term water treatment efforts by local authorities with respect to the Chicago River and how such water treatment practices can yield success stories. She also offers some recommendations to improve your water treatment practices: https://hubs.ly/Q02lQDP00

I found this on the walk through of a project I was assigned to a few years ago and immediately thought: "Weebles Wobble but They Don't Fall Down". Then immediately I realized I was in for quite the challenge as this was one of the less concerning things that was found that day. It's easy to point fingers but this definitely should of been corrected before it got this bad. #preventativemaintenance #wastewatertreatmentplant #wastewatertreatmentplantoperator #wastewatertreatmentsolutions #waterindustry #waterislife
