Yesterday SCDOT opened the third northbound lane on I-85 from mile marker 80 to mile marker 90. This project is part of the I-85 Widening and Improvement Project. SCDOT appreciates the patience of the traveling public and especially the residents of Cherokee and Spartanburg counties as we work to complete this project. Drivers in this area should use caution as crews work to put final pavement markings in place.
- Expanding FDOT Pavement Evaluations Statewide! -
We are ramping up our Florida Department of Transportation Pavement Evaluations, encompassing over 300 pavement core locations statewide. Notably, this effort features an extensive analysis of SR 776 in Sarasota County.
Pavement Evaluations play a pivotal role in enhancing our infrastructure knowledge. By meticulously analyzing the alignment of travel lanes and side streets, we gain a comprehensive understanding of the existing conditions. This strategic approach empowers the FDOT to prioritize projects effectively and allocate resources where they are needed the most.
The significance of Pavement Evaluations cannot be understated. It is through such meticulous assessments that we can pave the way to safer, more efficient travel experiences for all. Our commitment to fostering well-maintained roadways aligns with our vision for sustainable and resilient communities.

Yesterday marked the two year anniversary of USDOT’s National Roadway Safety Strategy, and MICHELIN - Mobility Intelligence was honored to add our voice to the community of Allies in Action as we work with Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) on a pilot program to help select grantees proactively use data to pinpoint risk hotspots in their road network and reduce traffic fatalities. The statistics are daunting, but collectively there’s excitement and momentum to take bold action to protect pedestrians, bicyclists and drivers and harness new technologies for greater impact.
And what better way to drive that momentum than the new round of Safe Streets for All program funding just announced! Over $1.25 billion for cities, counties, tribes and MPO’s to develop innovative safety action plans and implement projects to prevent roadway deaths.

Safe System Snippet:
Bridge width and road safety.
Two great studies have been produced regarding the effects of bridge width on road safety. One by Mak and one by Corben Et. Al.
In summary, increasing the bridge width results in a significant reduction of crashes - 35%.
In another study Zegeer and Council found that the difference between bridge and road width is related to crashes. Crashes increase as bridge width decreases.
(In the photo you see Heathcote Road bridge, which is being upgraded for safety. Do the two different bridge width markers annoy us? Yes. Is it the major cause of crashes? No.)

"Ogden Avenue carries fewer than 20,000 vehicles per day, yet it still includes two to four vehicular lanes in each direction and additional one-way service drives in both directions. This wide car-centric design encourages speeding and poses a barrier to pedestrians, cyclists, and transit riders. The project will implement multiple Proven Safety Countermeasures such as eliminating vehicular lanes; installing pedestrian refuge islands; building protected bike lanes along the entire corridor; and adding pedestrian countdown timers and leading pedestrian intervals at all signalized intersections. The project will also add bump-outs, ADA-accessible bus stops, raised crosswalks, and left-turn phasing."
What an awesome project that will save lives, reduce emissions, and support neighborhood economic development. Bravo, CDOT.🚶♀️🚲🌎❤️

Great news! CDOT's Ogden Avenue Corridor Project receives a $21m SS4A grant to eliminate vehicular lanes, install pedestrian refuge islands, and build protected bike lanes along the entire corridor.

Session 6.415: Road Profilers have a major role in assisting Road Agencies meet new MUTCD mandatory pavement marking retroreflectivity requirements.
Abstract:
New MUTCD Mandatory Requirements. The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) was updated & effective from Sept.6. 2022.
Road Agencies have until Sept. 2026 to implement a plan to manage pavement markings over their road network to be compliant with the MUTCD minimum retroreflective requirements. This should not be a daunting task for road agencies i.e., DOTs, Public Works, Counties & Cities who may have limited budgets & limited personnel resources. Not all agencies will have the budget or roads to justify capital expenditure for a Mobile Retroreflectometer Unit (MRU). However, they will require pavement marking retroreflectivity assessment services to insure compliance or face litigation in the event of noncompliance or traffic accidents.
Road Profiler's have a major opportunity to assist road agencies comply with the new MUTCD Minimum retroreflective pavement marking requirements. This an opportunity for road profilers to generate new additional revenue with little running costs while surveying the agencies road networks. Pavement marking retroreflective data can be collected simultaneously while collecting pavement profile data.

I-75 Traffic? At a FDOT meeting this week with the team (Matthew Garff and Stiles McDonald) looking over plans for I-75 between Hwy 44 and Hwy 326 here in Central Florida. It’s a head scratcher for sure: Here are a few take aways:
1) Peak traffic counts around Ocala are up to 90,000 today. They are anticipating the number to be 120,000 by 2030 (in just seven years) and 140,000 by 2040. But does that factor in the new Buc-ees and Chic-fil-A?… lol
2). This stretch of Hwy will be under massive construction over the next 5-10 years, starting in 2025.
3). Plans for adding new auxiliary lanes are in place. These new lanes will run between the exits and end at each exit. I wish they would have semi truck only lanes.
4). If you own low lands along I-75, there’s a good chance it’s an acquisition target for a drainage retention area. You can see some of their potential targets highlighted in blue on the map.
5). One traffic consultant said the I-75/Hwy 326 exit may have the most semi truck traffic in the country.
I’ve seen it look like a parking lot along this stretch and don’t doubt this.
Here’s the link the the FDOT’s website, where you can find more detailed information on their plans: https://lnkd.in/e3sbWrdA#svn#ocala#realestate#fdot#svndifference#commercialrealestate#REfyi
We build better connections! Case in point: Illinois Tollway’s Elgin-O’Hare Western Access Project, which improves connectivity for drivers in NW Illinois and provides a vital link to O'Hare International Airport.
We performed overall Corridor #ConstructionManagement, including overseeing contracts and scheduling for about 20 projects, many concurrent.
The mega project comprised over 17 miles of new roads, 15 new or reconfigured interchanges, ramps, frontage roads, pavement rehabilitation, and a new, all-electronic tolling system. https://lnkd.in/gMVh8P_J#TYLinConnects#transportation
