First summer internship complete! Some of the things I did include: •Becoming the third generation of Craig’s to work at Timken •Learn what goes on in a manufacturing plant •Understand what roles employees at Timken have and what their responsibilities are •Job shadow 20 people in Sr/ Leadership roles in the plant •Report out to leadership about what I learned and what roles I could or could not see myself in •Built a strong network for my future career in engineering

"We shouldn't have to do that" Recently I was talking to someone in the industry and that was their sentiment surrounding extended & enhanced onboarding for new summer interns. We had just discussed how our Workforce Development team gets a full week to get our new summer interns (current college students studying something construction or engineering related) and how appreciative we are that our Execs & Operations Team fully support this investment. Should we HAVE to do this? To me that is irrelevant - we have data and anecdotal evidence showing that we NEED to do this. Our commitment to "Investing In People" compels us to take the time necessary to set these young folks (most of whom are new to the industry) up for success & for "Winning In The Field" Reminds us of the quote from Henry Ford: "The only thing worse than training your employees and having them leave is not training them and having them stay." It's good for the interns, Sargent, our industry, and our region(s). That's a wrap! Just finished up today's webinar with Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology (CCAT) and here are some of the top questions we got about how to create a successful internship program: 1. What are some of the ways your internship programs have evolved over time? At Westminster Tool for years we never had a formal program and instead searched for interns for specific projects with applicants of a specific skillset. But we found that we weren't building long-lasting, meaningful relationships from these opportunities. Today, we've changed our approach to focus on how WE can add value to the intern. We search for applicants from all different educational and skill backgrounds and focus on creating goals around their needs. As a result, we have a better chance of inspiring the next generation of manufacturers in our state, and the interns we work with are more likely to want to stay. 2. What are some lessons learned? What are some of the biggest mistakes you've made with interns? The biggest lesson learned is to stop siloing interns in a closed-off area of the business. Even when hiring an intern for super specific project or technical area, it's absolutely critical to expose them to other areas of the business and the rest of your team. Internships are all about professional exploration, not just about completing a project and adding value to the company. So it's important to give that intern a real opportunity to meet new people and explore other career paths. 3. What can small businesses do to get started with building an internship program for the first time? Take advantage of state resources! CT is home to so many different resources for finding applicants and funding programs. Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology (CCAT)'s Internship Program not only gives you access to a whole database of regional applicants looking for manufacturing internships, but also offers wage reimbursement support to help offset those costs.

Intern Spotlight!!! C&B is proud to recognize Trey Reynolds. Trey Interned with C&B this summer before returning to Auburn University to finish his Degree in Industrial Engineering.  Trey hit the ground running when he came on board helping us set up our new lining & coating facility.  He worked under the direction of our plant engineer to perform time studies, process flow models, and physical set up of the process flow that we are currently using today.  Trey jumped right in to learning our products and processes, and helped in many departments this summer. "What I enjoyed the most was being able to give my input on important projects and decisions, something that many lower-level employees/interns don’t commonly have an opportunity to do. I enjoyed learning the steps and procedures needed to complete a project. For example, how to go from the early development stage to getting the idea approved, then contacting vendors and getting the necessary material ready to actually implement the solution/idea." We have MCIG Co-President John Cook. John worked an investment banking internship at TD Cowen. What was your internship experience? "I had an incredible summer at TD Cowen and was surrounded by hard-working, intelligent individuals. I worked primarily in electric vehicles and renewable energy and am so grateful for the experience I had this summer." Favorite memory? "We had an impromptu happy hour during the second week of the internship that lasted hours. It was a fantastic place to get to know everyone and made the rest of the summer feel like I was working with a group of friends." Skills you learnt from your internship? "Crafting investment thesis, qualitative and quantitative research, understanding company positioning in an industry, financial modeling, financial valuation." Key advice to those recruiting? "Network to meet people, not just to network and "check the box"".
