I visited the new Conran Shop Flagship on Sloane Square and really liked the space, not huge but well curated. But…and it’s a big but, I really can’t see it working for them in any commercial sense. It’s very very lightly merchandised, hardly anything to buy. Particularly those treats that might tempt you when you’re browsing for an investment piece but want a gift for a friend (or just for you). There’s hardly any depth or breadth in the edit. it begs those perennial questions about exactly what is the function of a Flagship?… this is actively promoted as a Flagship, even though the brands biggest store is only half a mile away at Brompton Cross. It’s a smart edit for sure and has some very clever and subtle nods to Terrance and his legacy, but there’s a real danger it undermines the brand as it sucks resources and cash from elsewhere. The future is experiential, but this experience is very compromised and needs a boost of energy provided by the great product they hope to sell. No doubt it will evolve, it must. And…Is Marylebone High Street store taking this same direction?. Is the once four floor store going to be now restricted to two as it is today, or is that temporary as they rebuild the upper levels? I first visited this store in December, two weeks after it opened in a beautiful historic building. **Poundland begins mass overhaul of general merchandise** Poundland & Dealz has begun a mass overhaul of its general merchandise ranges that will see 2,000 new lines introduced across all its UK and Ireland stores. The change means that the discount retailer has access to the same products available in Pepco’s 4,800-plus store estate across Europe. Poundland said the move will help it deliver on its promise of amazing value to customers and is the single biggest change to its offer in its 30-plus history. From today, shoppers will start to see new lines across kitchenware, toys, technology, as well as bathroom and home décor. Almost 1,000 of the new items are now available in Poundland’s 850-plus stores across the UK and Ireland, with the rest of the changeover taking place over the coming weeks.
