Continually facinated by this ongoing story. The Milwaukee Repertory Theater's successful $78 million fundraising effort for its expansion and renovation project contrasts sharply with the broader challenges faced by many non-profit arts institutions in the post-pandemic economy. While the Rep showcases a best-case scenario of robust community and donor support enabling ambitious growth, other organizations struggle with financial strain, reduced revenues, and a focus on survival rather than expansion. This disparity highlights the diverse impacts of the pandemic on the non-profit arts sector, with the Milwaukee Rep's success story being more the exception than the rule, as many institutions continue to navigate economic recovery and the quest for stability. How is the support of the arts in your community?

Twenty two years later.."Out of the ashes, something new, something wonderful has risen." "An engineering marvel - the building glows both inside and outside thanks to translucent marble tiles covering the exterior of the 138-foot-tall cube-shaped facade. Even though the venue's covered in stone, it feels bright and welcoming inside. Three theaters comprise the venue, and the trio can be rearranged into different configurations—62 different configurations, in fact. Those different iterations will provide artists in theater, music, dance, film and opera with the creative space to determine the exact stage arrangement to complement their work. Walls, floors and even seats can be shuffled into a variety of layouts, including theater-in-the-round, end stage, thrust and traverse configurations." https://lnkd.in/eDJRsR7e #nyc

A fantastic and deep look into the theater industry. It is a scary time for many, and for me its an odd time to feel like we are thriving. But here we are. ...I also don't want to say that we are thriving, without knocking on wood... This article speaks to many headwinds we are facing as well as a few of the strategies that keep Orlando Family Stage moving forward. Focus on the WHY. Focus on the IMPACT you want to see in your community. Stop doing shows, just to do them, but WHY are YOU doing them? Build new lines of business. Build tools to give you more information on your customers. Find ways to make an extra dollar on each seat, or at each concessions visit, build revenue through rentals, community workshops, etc. etc. etc. Theater is evolving, yes. But if you are focused on the right things, you can still find ways to thrive. Theater is not what we do... it is our TOOL to make the world better place for everyone. https://lnkd.in/eQYzfes2

Ever heard of Habibi Kiosk? A Bold Move For Munich’s Main Theater Culture in Munich is mutating into new perspectives at Habibi Kiosk ; the success at its privileged location addresses difficult questions about the city. Although the Habibi Kiosk looks like an independent cultural space, it is actually the bold appendix of the publicly-funded Kammerspiele theater of the city of Munich. Locally renowned, this theater is difficult to spot from the outside. Its building, Schauspielhaus, is absorbed into the homogenous architecture of the Maximilianstrasse. In contrast, the Habibi Kiosk has been cannily shoved under people's noses on the high street. In a city where one in four residents hails from an immigrant community, the theater’s team began exploring the following question: Is Munich's urban society – with all its different perspectives – represented at the theater of the city (financed with everyone’s taxes)? In other words, can we find a fair representation of all citizens here at the theater? #culturechange #munich #HabibiKiosk #theater #inclusive #cities #culturematters

Amid the echoes of the "American Theater Crisis" reverberating through headlines, a moment of reflection is in order. American Theatre shares its perspective on the losses suffered and the potential waiting to be unearthed, shedding light on theatres that have adapted, scaled back, relocated, or pressed pause. 🌐 Personally, the pandemic etched the significance of the digital domain into my consciousness. While the inimitable charm of in-person experiences endures, the digital realm has extended a hand of accessibility. And for the institutions that were not well versed in digital or accessibility, are seeing their blind spots in real-time. 💡 Amidst the currents of rising costs, hustle culture, and the pursuit of transparency, a chasm has grown between the arts and its audience. This juncture beckons us to infuse a human-centered design ethos into our endeavors, to nurture community-led initiatives that resonate. After all, the core of nonprofit existence is to serve our communities. 🕰️ As 2023 marks a return to 'normalcy,' (acknowledging the privileged phrase) we must tread gently. Rebuilding takes time, especially when the aim is a purposeful reconstruction. The past years have exacted a toll; visionaries striving for change faced setbacks, from lost jobs to health battles and workplace concerns. 💰 The existence of available funding, be it governmental, foundational, or individual, is an undeniable truth. The question that lingers is: what's impeding its flow, as it did during the throes of the pandemic? As we seek answers, our focus should expand to include cultivating positive perceptions of giving, forging collaborations with peers, and cementing accountability through thoughtful policies. The path ahead necessitates unity; it beckons us to channel our efforts into nurturing the coming generations; forging a resilient arts landscape that stands tall against adversity. #arts #culture #theater #leadership #accessibility #digital #funding #ArtsRevival #CommunityCollaboration #InvestInChange #ArtsResilience #NextGenInvestment -Posted by OneUp

We are delighted to announce the Aranya Theater Festival 2024【阿那亚戏剧节】with the theme of ‘Exception and Rule’【常规和例外】 This theme inspires us to recognize that what may seem natural to some can be an exception for others. In both art and life, it prompts us to question established conventions and rules, exploring how boundaries are shifted, twisted, and reshaped. We invite playwrights, directors, and performers to break free from the constraints of traditional theater, while also encouraging audiences to delve into discussions about the essence of human experience and theatrical art. We seek to navigate the complex interplay between adaptation and deviation, tradition and innovation, stability and change, as well as the universal and the unique within the realms of theatrical aesthetics and culture, calling on all who cherish theater and life to join in the exploration. We celebrate the power of theater through empathetic communications, immersive experiences, and groundbreaking debates, challenging the rules and anchoring exceptions to create truly extraordinary moments. We aim to capture the luminous dream of theater, realized through vivid colors and concrete images. The ringing of a telephone, the crash of waves, the reversal of a clock, the sight of a sailboat through a window—these are the keys that link reality to dreams. Life itself is a grand play, filled with established rules and unpredictable exceptions. Design: @4ac_design

Harlequin's Transformative Flooring: Revolutionizing Theater and Show Spaces At the Plasa Show in London, I discovered an amazing technology designed for theaters and shows – Harlequin. Harlequin stands as the performance floor of choice for some of the world's most prestigious dance and performing arts companies, theaters, venues, schools, production companies, and global events. What sets it apart is the Harlequin Liberty Switch, which can transform flooring of multipurpose venues with the single touch of a button. Dance requires sprung floors that minimize the risk of injury, whereas theatre or event spaces require hard floors. With this revolutionary technology, you can save time, money, and energy through unique installations that allow you to click a button and seamlessly transform the floor into a rigid space. This is made possible by innovative carriages beneath the floor that swiftly and efficiently make the transformation, providing the flexibility needed for various types of performances and events. https://lnkd.in/dDQQUt4M Harlequin Floors Option 1 Events • Technology • Content #HarlequinTech #PerformanceFloors #InnovationInTheatre #ArtShowFlooring #HarlequinLibertySwitch #FlexibleStages #DanceFlooring #TheatreTechnology #MultipurposeVenues #EventFlooring #TechnologistDXB #WeMakeItHappen #Option1Live

Work in this industry is rarely a sprint; it's usually a marathon's pace. A perfect example of this is our current renovation study with the City of Lewisville in North Texas. The first leg began earlier this year. We were on a feasibility study team to determine possible expansion plans for the Lewisville Grand Theater. The end result of that study where some terrific ideas, but none of them were fundable given the city's current budget constraints and spending priorities. But that didn't mean there weren't other solutions to explore. We're theatre people at our core. And when are creatives at their best? When they have to go outside of the box. And so we went to work again, coming up with fixes and tweaks the city could make to maximize this facility's throughput, service capabilities, and revenue potential for a budget they could afford to do right now. The recommended changes we developed in conjunction with Denise Helbing's team will help this venue continue serving its community at a high level for another ten years or more. The journey of a building is a long one, and that's okay. Community investments that are meant to last require the time to do it right. And that's exactly what the leaders in Lewisville are doing. #lewisville #texas #renovation #theatreplanning #theatre #performingarts https://lnkd.in/gbavaAG9
