It’s still so important that we give attention to the role of women and girls in STEM. Despite work to change things, girls still feel less connected to STEM than boys, have access to fewer STEM subjects in all-girl schools and are not performing as well at higher maths. Women are still under-represented at senior levels in STEM roles in academia and industry - LinkedIn data shows that only 1 in 8 C-suite STEM roles are held by women, compared to 1 in 4 in non-STEM. So there’s lots more to do. It’s not all about the leaky pipeline of STEM graduates - we need to think about how stereotyping of children from the early years impacts their future choices, the culture and precarity that can exist in STEM workplaces and how we can use the conversation about women in STEM to consider how we make it an inclusive place for everyone… let’s throw the doors wide open and welcome everyone. There is certainly plenty to discover, and multitudes of problems to solve! #moregreatminds #internationaldayofwomenandgirlsinSTEM #womeninscience
To celebrate International Day of Women and Girls in Science we want to highlight some of our National Challenge Fund Projects. The National Challenge Fund is a €65M challenge research fund under the Government’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan which aims to support and accelerate research to address national challenges in the areas of Green Transition and Digital Transformation. From new digital innovations, fostering a healthy environment, to avoiding food waste, challenge teams are diligently working on solutions to address current societal challenges. “Knowledge – if it does not determine action – is dead to us.” (Plotinus, ~204 – 270 AD) Delighted to contribute to the “#Philanthropies as #Innovators in #Finance” at #BuildingBridges23, organized by Catalytic Finance Foundation & a big #thankyou to fellow speakers Adama MARIKO & Maya Ziswiler, our dynamic moderator Barbara Buchner & the super active audience for a fast-paced #fishbowl session. The insights? Many in 60 mins. Here 7 observations to inform our #practice once back at our desks after the #conference. 1. From a technical perspective, #blendedfinance is coming of age. A wide range of #financial #instruments has been piloted. Organizations everywhere are assessing how they can help them to crowd in more #capital. 2. Philanthropic capital is valuable & can be complementary to #private & #public sector funding. But the universe of charitable foundations is far from monolithic. 3. The proudest contributions include building #infrastructure. Had The Rockefeller Foundation not convened the meetings in #Bellagio, #Italy in 2007 & 2008, #impactinvesting would have taken longer to take off. Industry-structuring organizations such as The Global Impact Investing Network (#GIIN) would not exist in the current shape. 4. Foundations can contribute to #innovativefinance by (a) #funding projects, (b) investing impact allocations of their #endowment, the 95-98% of the funds invested at any point in time, & (c) as #intermediaries, leveraging their subject matter insights, #networks & in some cases, specialized #expertise, as the Catalytic Finance Foundation. 5. For folks wishing to engage to jointly #innovate in finance, the foundation space is often opaque. #Searchcost is high. Similarly, for foundations the specifics of the many #developmentbanks & their mandates are not straightforward to understand. Networks such as Finance In Common – the #global network of Public Development Banks (#PDBs), seeking to align financial flows on the #2030Agenda & #ParisAgreementforClimateChange – can be powerful entry points. 6. Understanding the different roles in the #ecosystem & where each actor has #comparativeadvantage is necessary to #grow the capital pie together; #capacitybuilding on all fronts is key to achieve this, as e.g. via the Driving Innovative Finance for Impact (#DIFI) course at IMD. 7. Finally, solving #how-to questions is what drives #results. The fishbowl format – according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary either “a bowl for the keeping of live fish” or “a place or condition that affords no privacy” once again proved a great way to dynamize our interaction. People into keeping fish know that a #freshwater #aquarium is easier to set up. Yet, to unlock the full #potential of blended finance in solving our #challenges, we need to build on today's more sophisticated "#seawater aquarium" kind of thinking. #impinv #innofin #philanthropy #catalyticfinance https://lnkd.in/em8xW4pX

ISS2024 - the 20th Annual conference of The International Joseph A. Schumpeter society “Transformation: Creative Accumulation and Creative Destruction in the Economy” is this year’s conference theme. Transformation as the theme focuses our attention upon change, which is a classical aspect of Schumpeter’s analysis of the economy and society. Creative accumulation and creative destruction refer to different organizational ways of creating transformation, either through large organizations or entrepreneurial ventures, respectively. Keeping in the spirit of the Schumpeter society, submitted papers can address a broad range of topics. Transformation and related notions of novelty, emerging challenges, and socio-economic change can be analyzed in different ways, perspectives and theoretical traditions. For example, papers are welcome which analyze industrial sectors, market systems, public policies, technologies, socio-economic contexts, history, geographical spatiality, amongst others. Due to Schumpeter’s interest in the individuals and organizations who are active in the creative accumulation and creative destruction, papers are also welcome on the micro-level of actors and agents who are engaged in activities like innovation, entrepreneurship, financing, R&D, and creating ecosystems. The International Joseph A. Schumpeter society will hold its 20th Annual conference – ISS2024 in Gothenburg, Sweden, between Sunday 9th June and Tuesday 11th June 2024. Organized by Maureen McKelvey, President of the Schumpeter Society Director of Gothenburg Centre on knowledge-intensive innovation ecosystems (U-GOT KIES), Göteborgs universitet (University of Gothenburg), Sweden. Upcoming calls for extended abstracts > 1 November: Open for submission of extended abstracts, and registration > 1 November: Launch of the ISS2024 website > 15 January: Deadline for submission for extended abstracts About the Schumpeter society at: https://lnkd.in/dhb2xwxu

Let’s talk about purpose. What makes you go to work every day? Most of us, including myself, must make a living, no doubt about that. But as I get older, having a real purpose with my job is becoming increasingly important. This notion accelerated during my 10 years at AstraZeneca. Contributing to improving and changing peoples lives for the better was a strong purpose. During the fall an opportunity emerged to join Investor AB, Sweden’s largest industrial holding company. And with that, also becoming an integral part of the amazing Wallenberg ecosystem. Another super strong purpose, as they are profoundly dedicated to developing Sweden. The film explains how. But in short, what is commonly referred to as the Wallenberg sphere includes 16 non-profit foundations, Investor AB, Wallenberg Investments AB and FAM AB, including Navigare Ventures AB and their respective holdings. Together, the foundations and the companies form an ecosystem that enables strong support for Sweden. The successes of each company, enable the foundations to distribute approximately SEK 2.8 billion annually and around 44 billion since the founding in 1917 to basic research and education in Sweden. In summary, the better the companies are performing, the more dividends are being paid to the non-profit foundations – and the more grants can be distributed to fund basic research and education. For the betterment of Sweden. https://lnkd.in/dYxpmc6w

Meet the team Thursday! 👋 ▶️ COMMIT The Community Media Institute for Continuing Education, Research and Consulting (COMMIT) is a non-profit organization established in 2010, in Austria. As its name suggests, it works to train, monitor and disseminate research focused on non-commercial media. In addition to this, COMMIT closely collaborates with organizations focusing on the areas of education and communication. Within MeDeMAP, COMMIT is coordinating the works within work package 6 - Supply meets demand, alongside other consortium institutions. This work package aims to contribute to a broad knowledge about the connection between the media and citizens, in order to understand how their intervention (for example, through European citizens' parliaments) benefits this relationship and, consequently, the countries’ democratic performance.
